Sitcom advice/recommendation Page 4

Ah well, there we go. I haven't watched it for 3 at least. I personally prefer them to those without him.

Well, since I started this, I might as well report back.

I got "Black Adder", "Black Books", "Father Ted", "Only Fools and Horses", "Spaced", and "The Thick of It" DVDs. I'm not too poor because I can wright them of as business expenses. I travel so much that my employer let's me expense a lot of crazy things.

So far, I watched a couple of episodes of each (not many, one or two). I don't know if "Only Fools and Horses" and "Black Adder" are for me. The former seemed a little too, set it up and knock it down type of jokes (like most US sitcoms). The latter seemed a bit too silly. But I will probably watch at least the first couple of seasons of each.

On a brighter note, "Black Books" and "Spaced" seemed a little more my type of show but I have been let down before. I am still indifferent on the others.

On the "8 Simple Rules" thread; I always though it was typical US crap but I never gave it a true try. So, maybe if I am feeling adventurous, I'll catch some re-runs.

Black Adder really depends on where you start with it. The first series has a completely different feel to the other 3 (and the various specials), so if you've just started there, then continue with it, please! :)
Right throughout the show, there's a lot of in-jokes in regards to British history if one knows what to look for. Yes it's silly, but it's also very, very clever.

OFAH I can understand kind of what you mean. I would have thought that it's a bit too British for most overseas markets to 'get', but do stick with it. Admittedly I wasn't around for much of the time, but I think that it really captures the essence of 80s and 90s life for hundreds of thousands of people in the country. Again though, especially if you've started with series one, keep going. It's not too different, but the show really took a couple of series' to settle in and properly find itself. Very funny stuff once it got going though.

And 8 Simple Rules probably is typical US crap, but it seems to have hit a chord with some around here. (There are a number of brilliant episodes though.)

Thanks for letting us know your opinions Justin - interesting! I tell you what though, I wish I had your expense account!

I'd forget the first series of Blackadder, and start with the second!

They're compleeeetely different. I don't really like the first series at all, but LOVE the others.

Exactly. Only fools and horses is class as well but very british.

I think someone mentioned this earlier, but if you like Spaced then you definitely give Green Wing a try. It's not really a sitcom, but it's funnier than most.

GW and Spaced are completely different though!

Alan Partridge (Watch this first, and then Knowing Me, Knowing You)

That should be the other way around surely. Knowing Me, Knowing You was before I'm Alan Partridge and you get a sense of how this character has developed, not to mention on the whole KMKY is funnier.

I LOVE 8 Simple Rules - I think it's the funniest American sitcom after Frasier.

Well you clearly haven't seen enough American sitcoms then. :D

I've seen a good few, actually: Rosanne, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Happy Days, Cheers, Taxi, Rodney, Hope and Faith, Less Than Perfect, Becker, Scrubs, Spin City, The Geena Davies Show, Two and a Half Men, That 70s Show, Seinfeld, Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond, Everybody Hates Chris ...

I cannot believe i am the only one mentioning steptoe! This show was before my time but i think is the greatest sitcom (british) made. Or at least one of them. The Americans should experience it.(I know they had there version but it isn't the same.) :)

I saw "I'm Alan Partridge" before Knowing Me, Knowing You. I found it funnier and more sitcom-y than KMKY.

KMKY is certainly worth watching to see how Alan got to IAP...but the fact it is a sort of spoof on chat/variety shows is a bit too transparent.

I really like Michael and Sonya on IAP...and Alan's creepiness comes on much stronger than in KMKY (uh huh).

It doesn't really matter which one you watch first: They both star Alan Partridge and he's one helluva hoot!

Yeah they are both great series, I just think on the whole KMKY is funnier, especially the Knowing Me Knowing Yule Christmas Special, really see Alan at his most desperate.

I think Alan Partridge is really good too. I wonder how Alan Partidge: The Movie is coming along ...

I know it's been a while but I figured I'd get back to you all. I've watched all of "Black Books" and "Father Ted" and LOVED them. I have both "Peep Show" and "The IT crowd" currently in queue to watch.

I've also given "Only fools and horses" and "Black Adder" but haven't enjoyed myself all that much. I watched about 5-6 episodes a piece but I'll finish out the whole season (I'll probably go ahead with "Black Adder" season 2, since I heard it's totally different) of both.

As a final note, I also watched a series here in the US called "Flight of the Conchords" and was knocked over by how clever and funny it is. So, if you ever get a chance please give that series a go.

I have alot of TV to watch but I am still up for more suggestions.
