Yes. I suppose it must be. It isn't in my memory but "For Your Love" is a song I associate with the stoo-dent bar jukebox in the early 1980s. It turns out that Clapton left in the month of its release - March 1965 - being a blues purist. And presumably it is one of Graham Gouldman's earliest efforts.

I see that Daevid Allen of Gong has died at the age of 77 on Friday 13th.

I bought Flying Teapot on CD a few weeks ago in a charity shop but haven't got around to playing it yet and I used to have Camembert Electrique as one of those first Virgin releases for 49p.

My memory associated with this extraordinary artist is quite ordinary. It's of my best mate staying with us, having moved to another school, and us going into Croydon to buy the most crazy looking record we could find. It was a bit of a competition between us. I came back with nothing because he bought two Daevid Allen/Gong discs and instinctively I knew I couldn't beat it. When they went on to the cheap old record player we had, it was even more clear that I had sensibly thrown in the towel.

That was probably mid to late 1970s and we found many laughs in it. There was the sense in that punk/indie era of it all being a throwback to some place in the very distant past. So long ago that it could itself have been from outer space when much of it was from less than half a decade earlier. It had quite a lot of mystique because there were various incarnations of Gong, including Gong Maison, and it all hovered on its own gigantic cannabis leaf in a commune between France, Australia and Mars.

Later - 1990s? - he'd crop up at festivals, especially near to the rave areas, and he'd be performing in a giant plastic bubble or something equally bizarre. It was the fringe of fringe and to that extent very reassuring as that was the same as it ever had been with him. I suppose, with hindsight, there are elements of Wayne Coyne and the Flaming Lips which have drawn on some of it, especially in terms of the performance art. I have always liked that sort of thing. It definitely has its place in broader culture.

Oops, I didn't know that. Aren't Toto going to release new album soon?

Yep, it's out next week. :)

Another sad day for classic rock . . .

I was one of the many who thought Andy Fraser had died years ago but that was because he caught AIDS. RIP - a wonderful bassist.

Listening to Paul Jones on Radio 2 he mentioned a new compilation album from Charlie Gillett's radio shows.

I stumbled across him when he was on BBC Radio London in the 1970s and it was so varied but always good quality stuff.

Excellent. Thanks for this news. CG was one of radio's finest and is still very much missed. As I think you know, I corresponded with him on another forum but only in the few years before his sad death.

Hah, Lindisfarne. Brilliant. My favourites on that one are "Uncle Sam" and "Train in G Major". "Back and Fourth" from 1978 is arguably the most consistent and it may well be the one you would like the best.
