Trying old shows - Nice suprises OR otherwise Page 3

the show relied too much on catchphrases.

You're not wrong there. Yesterday I watched episode 6 and it felt as if the writer started with nearly blank papers just with all the multiple "I didn't get...", "Super!" and " A cock up at the...front" written on them and filled the holes with pieces of normal dialogue and plot. But as I said...Geoffrey Palmer makes it all worth.

I haven't come across this ... is it available?

The Legacy Of Reginald Perrin? It's on my complete Perrin box set...I didn't see it being sold seperatly yet.

In fairness the catchphrases in Perrin were more like anti-catchphrases - they are funny because they grate on the protagonist and therefore point up his sense of being trapped in the situation. It is humour that works at a different level to "I'm free!".

That's for sure!

Precisely, which is why they felt so hollow and pointless in 'Legacy'!

Sadly, the original The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin included in that box set is reported to be so heavily edited that I cannot for a moment recommend anyone buys it.

D'Oh! :S

Not really an OLD sitcom but when I watched it week by week I loved Nighty Night as the darkness and unbelievable character of Julia Davis unfolded. However watching it on DVD and knowing what is going to happen I really didn't enjoy watching it on DVD.

I donated it to charity shop today.

Why the editing with the Perrin box set? Heavy swearing or holocaust denial?

Do Not Adjust Your Set.

I picked it up from a charity shop. If you watch it as a kids show you'll be pleasantly surprised and the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band are brilliant.

Neither, as far as I'm aware. I think they're just cheap.

This touches something I wonder about sometimes. I usually watch one episode a day when I'm watching a sitcom, whether it's something I've seen before or a new-to-me older show. But I have wondered if I'm doing myself and the show a disservice. They were meant to be watched weekly and some may not hold up to daily exposure.

Unnecessary over-thinking probably.

I tend to watch whole series in as close to one go as I can find the time to manage and have recently been wondering the exact same thing. Alas I don't really have the luxury of all that time to space viewings out!

No, I think you have something there. I do think that watching a show weekly as it's broadcast does make a big difference. Unfortunately as I live outside the U.K. I have been forced into watching DVDs and downloads and I don't think it does the shows any favours.
