I watched The Exorcist(DC) again the other night and thoroughly enjoyed that.

I found some of the images in 'The Ring' quite disturbing, and couldn't sleep that night--- I think freaky stuff is far scarier than gore - the scene in 'Jacobs Ladder' where a car drives away and you can see the demon on the back seat... *shudder*

I enjoy both types.
Psychological (The Shining) and Gory (The Thing) which is both, isolation and exploding aliens 
The Thing is a fantastic movie, alien and Aliens are good to Alien is more horror Aliens is action. No real horror films have come out for ages just cheap hack and slash bollocks

I would like to write a horror, but I wouldn't know where to start? And how to write suspense and get the general pacing right.
Scream was one of the best recent horrors that stands out for me, using the rules of horror, is pretty cool and a nice homage to the classics.
