Max Bygraves dies

Max Bygraves's gentle comedy and music had a prominent place in my household in my childhood. To me you might as well of come from outta space but made mum and dad very happy.

Like a lot of parents of the pre-baby boomer generation he provided a resassuring presence in a world full of long or spikey haired layabouts shouting into a microphone.

Max had no need to swear or tell blues jokes when the missus was watching, he wasn't on drugs or had three girlfriends. You could here all the words of the songs and at least you could understand his humour and stories unlike all that Monty Python stuff or arty farty plays the BBC would transmit.

Also it would be ironic if it rained at his funeral.

Great performer. Even in the obituaries, much of his work has been overlooked. One of the last of a genuinely inspiring, hugely talented generation of performers who lived to entertain the nation. RIP Max.

RIP

Thought he'd died long ago tbh.

Sad news. may he rest in peace.

RIP Max.

As Aaron says one of the last of a great line who learned the business the hard way and, because on the Halls you could be called on to do anything, he was a great all round entertainer. Suppose Brucie is about the only one left now.

I first knew of Max by listening to Educating Archie.

If the obit I read is true, I didn't realise he got the nickname Max because of his Max Miller impersonations for the troops in WWII.

I believe he adopted it as his formal stage name in tribute to Miller, rather than the simpler 'nickname' route most articles are claiming.

:( RIP

The Goodies got a lot of mileage out of him. I recall in the late 80s or early 90s he had to cancel a concert in Queensland due to a lack of ticket sales.

:) Good ole Max, rest in peace.
