Capital punishment - yes or no ? Page 5

Just to add a new twist to the argument, during the London Riots a number of street gangs teamed up to commit acts of criminality. A lot of them were arrested and given long sentences - whilst they've been off the streets, crime in those areas has gone down.

So here is my pro-capital punishment stance - if the criminal shows no remorse for their violent behaviour, then put them down, the same way you would a wild animal. They cannot / will not be rehabilitated due to nature / nurture and their continued existence is a drain on society.

(Though I'd rather have them locked up for long periods of time and off the streets)

Or countries with less parity between rich and poor have less violent crime.

So death to every one worth more than £100,000 PA (sorry Marcp) and less than £10,000 PA (sorry Scats)

How do you know if someone is genuinely remorseful and not just faking it? If I committed a crime I'd feign remorse just to get a more lenient sentence. I'd imagine most do.

Give longer sentences to people who show remorse.

There was No Escape with Ray Liotta that was pretty much what billwill describes, you can also throw in Fortress with Christopher Lambert and the John Carpenter classic Escape From New York. Oh and there was some space station one out recently with that bloke from Neighbours.

Wasn't Alien 3 another? Also episode 2 of Blake's Seven, when Blake rescues Gan and Vila from the prison planet (slightly embarrassed at knowing this stuff).

BBC estimates the cost of keeping someone in prison to be £47000pa.

46 years x £47000 = £2,162,000.

That's a bog standard offender, not your high security, celebrity child killer.

I don't get the 'death penalty as a deterrent" argument. Don't a lot of American states still have the death penalty? And isn't their murder rate still one of the highest in the Western world?

They certainly have a very high rate of re-offending, although the statistics suggest that few of these re-offenders have had capital punishment, which proves what a great deterrent it is.

an indian version of them abandoned prisons

Wasn't there a prison at an oil rig or something in Face/Off?

With magnetic shoes.

I loved those shoes.

I get sick about hearing about child murderers all the time, as if they're the be all and end all of evil murderers.

I think a non-sexual child murderer is actually perceived as less heinous than a non-murdering paedo.

As is a male child murderer than a female one.

(That sentence doesn't really make sense. But you know what I mean.)

I loved those shoes. And I'd kill everyone on the BCG so I could get sentenced to an oil rig and given a pair of them.

Ok oil rig prison with magnetic shoes is a fail.

Not sure I do understand; women are often hated more for their crimes against kids because they're "supposed" to be the carer.

Yes, that's what I mean. A man might murder a kid and get 10 years, a woman will likely get 20 for the same crime.
