My personal favourite: I know you are, but what am I?
Is Roy Chubby Brown funny? Page 4
Roy "Chubby" Brown was due to perform at Sheffield City Hall in January next year but Andrew Snelling, chief executive of Sheffield City Trust, has cancelled his appearance following complaints, saying:
"As our entertainment venues reopen following lockdown restrictions, we have been reviewing our programme of events. We have decided to remove the rescheduled show by comedian Roy Chubby Brown at Sheffield City Hall. We don't believe this show reflects Sheffield City Trust values, particularly our ambition that our leisure, culture and entertainment venues are inclusive for all in Sheffield."
However, leader of Sheffield Lib Dems Shaffaq Mohammed responded: 'It smacks of the nanny state. Where do we go from here? Are we going to ban Jimmy Carr?"
I think you have to have your "group of twits on the booze" hat on for him. You have to get yourself in that mindset almost as if you are there in some dive in a poor part of town with half your clothes off., probably with a tower, tacky fairy lights, a ludicrously blingy modern football ground, and the sort of gay bars which first opened in 1971 and have never changed all in the vicinity. Mostly I can't do it. Sometimes I can.
I don't like swearing much in modern sitcom, especially where it is distinctly middle class. Dubious themes are fine by me from 1970s sitcoms but not in current times. But Brown isn't sitcom and he is so over the top I get the feeling that he himself is one great piss take of his own act and content. By doing it, he sort of puts insensitivity in other products a bit to shame for they then come across as much nastier. These are the ones which to use an art analogy paint what they consider impressive paintings in animal dung. Brown on the other hand just offers the art gallery a sack of animal dung to dump on its floor as a work of great art.
The original poster (who called himself buttstench) 9 years ago and only ever posted once, might now be the councillor for Sheffield who is protecting everyone from being offended.
It's good that we have people that can watch his material on our behalf and decide it's not for us.
I'm no great fan of Brown's but, given he had been performing there for thirty years, I am quite intrigued as to what they thought they were going to get when they booked him to appear this time? Not booking him is fine, every privately owned venue has the right not to give a platform to anyone, but to book Roy Chubby Brown and then cancel on the grounds of vulgarity and taste seems, well, pretty stupid.
Considering the extra sales for merchandise etc he'll get from all this publicity Roy Chubby Brown will probably be better off financially than before, so I wouldn't be surprised if he was behind it. In fact my advice to any past-it or mediocre comedian is get cancelled and rake in the dosh.
Cynic
Not as funny as the League of Gentlemen.

Yes, see where you are going there, but I'm not buying it.

That's exactly how I feel. It's like people who go to see Andrew Dice Clay and say they were offended. If you're easily offended, why choose Dice in the first place? It's like watching a porno and complaining there isn't enough plot.
By a curious coincidence I was just watching Roy on BubeTube. Not really my thing, but a few laffs in there. My '''''mate''''' used to play his vids when I was at uni and he hasn't changed at all over the last 20 years.
This whole story reminds me of a porn actress who moaned (tee hee), '20 years in the biz and all I got was tired.' At first I felt sorry for her - then I thought, Wtf was she expecting to gain from this experience?

Very few people are. Not even me. Believe it or not, I was just rewatching that too.

That's possible too. I remember that 'scandal' when Posh went back to the Body shop cos they'd forgotten her one pound discount. Everyone ripped the shit out of her, but she AND the Body shop had never been so discussed. Maybe Chubby's manager is behind the whole thing... Weird he got relatively few presales and then shitloads of signees.

We've all been there.
