I believe you're thinking of the short-lived but fondly remembered Grumble Tunnel, a sitcom about a family forced to live in a mineshaft after a tunnel collapse. Audiences would tune in to watch the plucky unit barely subsisting on lichen and moisture sucked off of stalagmites and wonder "which character will die this week?" If I remember correctly it starred Dennis Waterman and the late Anita Dobson.
