If Europeans are eating beet leaves then you're even stranger than I'd thought possible. :S

Well, I'm not sure if there are different varieties but beetroot salad leaves are quite common. I would have thought or hoped at least that with beet farming, that traditional America would have utilized the whole vegetable. If were talking about tradition things, such as beanless chilli.

I made a huge pot of red beans and rice last week. They have their place, but their place is not in chili.

The funny thing is, I don't like the mix of textures created between rice and beans. Pleased But why not have pork or chicken in your rice instead? Sez the vegetarian. Errr

Wimpey.

Red beans and rice is a classic New Orleans dish. It contains plenty of andouille sausage and tasso (smoked, spiced pork.)

Well that's alright then! :D

Mmmmmmmm. Beetroot. Lovely slicey beetroot.

I love the finely chopped beetroot you get in salad. Nom nom nom. But you can't BEET a pickled beetroot.

To be honest, I don't think I've ever had it any other way. It's by far the most common form over here.

Well done beet yourself up over it.

Yep, love beetroot, I prefer pickled though.

Would a person still look weird if they had say, four lettuce heads in their fridge?

Of course not. If you grow lettuces and they are all about to start growing upward and going to seed, then obviously pick and refrigerate them. You should, however, leave a few in the garden to go to seed and hopefully they will self-seed for the next crop.

Beetroot is a damned fine veg, if you Americans don't want them. We'll swop them for all our pigs feet.

The key to good beetroot is to boil first in water for 15 minutes to 40 minutes depending on size. Then peel and boil in vinegar (with a few spoonfuls of raw sugar) for 40 minutes. The result: delicious filling for any burger:
