Sitcom Setting. Page 5

Sarcasm is the main reason I left this board, for a long time. I look in occasionally but see it hasn't changed much. The clique are on the warpath yet again. Sad people

What prompted you to come back then?

To be fair she said she 'looks in' to see what has changed, she is sad as she thinks 'longevity' equals 'superiority' so a Rupert Murdochesqe' clique emerges.

I know. Why don't we put the show on right here!

Sorry dellas, but I was asking bushbaby.

Just for the record I wasn't being sarcastic.
It was a genuine piece of advice - presumimg the OP's question was, in itself, genuine, rather than a wind-up.
It's also incredibly poor manners to come into a comunity of writers - both aspiring and working - and say "got any ideas?".
As those who writers who actually write will confirm, coming up with ideas can be hard.
Advice and critique are reasonable requests - but to ask others to do the basic thinking for you is rude/lazy/taking the piss.
More than happy to discuss the principles behind this, but the name-calling is a bit uncalled for.
As it happens it has turned into an interesting discussion about character versus setting, so all is not lost.

It very nearly turned into an interesting discussion about character versus setting... though I suppose why one person decides to become upset with a stanger because of what they say to a third stranger, on the internet, is interesting in itself.

;) Rwayne that you are intrigued regarding one persons response to a stranger and all subsequent responses, deems you as culpable as all other 'strangers' who become involved.

Stranger danger.

It's the principle I find interesting. If person A becomes upset with person B
(Persons A and B having never met) because of a remark written on the internet it seems, to me, that's more how a person feels about themselves rather than anything else.

Jeez, I go offline for 24 hours...

If OP returns, I am intrigued to know how he has/got 'all the characters' without having any idea of a setting. Dunno how one would even begin to develop a sitcom without knowing the sit bit.

What's the quote... " Give me a boy until he is seven and I will have your kid..." Or something like that.

Laughing out loud

An interesting addition to the character debate - how many shows use a character who hates themselves, and goes round taking it out on everyone else?

The comedy potential's there from both ends - the sarcastic attacks providing witty repartee, complemented by the character's own failings providing 'situational' humour.

Fawlty, Blackadder, Bucket, Steptoe even... and plenty others.

So when OP said "Can I have some help with...?" you heard "I want to steal your work". I'm not wishing to reopen an argument, and certainly not with Laz, there were far more rude boogers posting.

But it's worth thinking about - OP asked for HELP. Help finding answers of their own, not help stealing other people's. Also, why not just ignore the request? Why get SO defensive you had to explicitly question OP's suitability for the task?

I took it to mean OP wanted help with techniques for finding new situations and places. So ... work places (look at a careers website!) or social groups (look at special interest groups on the net) or unexpected places (google earth) etc.

Aaaaaaaaaanyhooz.

;) Obvious, a 'comedy forum' full of characters seeking fame, all anonymous ,plenty of space for interpretation.

I'm presuming you mean someone who uses phrases like "you're a bit of a twat" and "f**k off"?

Pirandello did it with out even having an author!

You know, if it was possible to do it there's a lot of potential. Forummers - Four people logged online in four wildly different situations, reacting to noobs and each other in a split screen fast switching style. Probably not sustainable for half hour, but as a three minute sketch?

[edit - natch "a lot of" from line 1]

Really, if you can't think of a setting and you want to write, you're in trouble before you've really started. It shouldn't be so difficult.
