Has PC ruined the British Sitcom? Page 7

I think we've seen sense now.

Maybe something had to be done but it went too far the other way. Now I think we've got a reasonable balance.

Oh I don't know, With Manning now no longer with us where are we gonna find the hate inspired comedy that keeps the "masses" happy. Whoever they are.

"A Scouser went to a prostitute. She said, ‘Do you want a blow job?’ He said, "I don't know. Will it affect me dole money ?"

"I went to see that Pavarotti last week and he was a right miserable git. He doesn’t like it when you join in "

Oh I forgot Davidson is still going isn't he.

You don't do a bad job at "offensive" yourself on occasion Pete...

Laughing out loud

I can say that because I know you can take a joke ... you being a post-modern ironic comedian, like...

Why didn't I think of this earlier? PC ruined Elle Ello as they canceled it because of complaints that it made fun of the French. I think if anyone on the planet is entitled to make fun of the French it is definately the British.

Wholeheartedly agree, and we should do so daily...
:)

My favourite one of all time is:

The French Army knife
only two blades...
a cork screw and a white flag

If that is "racist" then so be it, I can't reason with you PC types any more!

Wasn't it just because the war finished? And it had been going on a long time.

Still any excuse to see Vicky Michelle in seamed stockings!

>_<

'Allo 'Allo!, not Elle Ello!

Also, definitely*

:P

And Pete, perhaps I missed some subtle reference, but there wasn't anything even slightly 'hate-inspired' about the Pavarotti gag.

Rumour has it Bush is now getting complaints from the American PC Brigade for taking the piss out of the British. Boom Boom

Would you not say my targets are legitimate Mr Rage ?

;)

Agree that the PC noose has thankfully loosened in last few years but cancelling 'Allo 'Allo for the French aspect is shocking. I was laughing with the French, not at them. Can't the broadcaster tell the difference?

That's my whole point ... we are making fun of everybody ... nobody is getting discriminated against ... and everybody should be laughing with us and at us and because of us (comedians) and the world should made of pink candy and, and, and...

...and well, and just this last week I see they had just ONE complaint about Herge's (Re-Issued) Adventures of Tin Tin In The Congo ... and kerbam, tried to get the book banned!!!

Fire away... !!!

The one area of PC censorship that does worry me is that nobody seems to have the balls to really take Islam to task, in the same way that the Life of Brian took Christianity to task thirty years ago. The rise of Islamic extremism, and the fact that an awful lot of so-called moderate Muslims agree with it, is one of todays big issues yet modern comedians and commissioning editors are petrified of dealing with it.

Exactly, Chipolata. A superb and overlooked point. Where's our freedom of speech (or what use is it?) when it's decided by other countries who don't practice it or don't want us to practice it?

One reason I (personally) refuse to write about religion is because it is one area where extreme discrimination (positive and negative) is occurring. It's easy to take a potshot at certain targets and be afraid to have a go at equally valid targets through fear of reprisal or the unwillingness of a broadcaster to produce a show that targetted all religions equally.

The Beeb would never have shown certain shows if the target was islam and not other religions. Whether censorship is good or bad, the Beeb can't even apply censorship fairly or consistently. If the subject was a level playing field then maybe I'd reconsider writing about it.

I agree about the beebs lack of consistency in censorship. They'll quite happily commission a show like the Popetown which attacks a fairly soft target but they wouldn't go near a similar sitcom ripping the piss out of Allah and the Koran.

As it happens Popetown never made it to air on the BBC. But I know what you mean... I think South Park illustrated the point quite well when, I'm think I'm right in saying they were explicitly rude about Jesus but got censored when they tried to do a mild joke about Allah... or something like that.

Funny that. I thought that Jesus is Islam's third most important prophet.
