John Le Mesurier

Though it is technically past midnight, John Le Mesurier would have been 100 today (5th April)... true legend of sitcom.

Welcome back Jack Wave where have you been?

A one-off actor indeed.

Enjoyed the documentary on Friday and learning he was even more of a laid back dream than Sgt Wilson.

Great anecdotes such as being called up and arriving at the barracks with his golf clubs, jazz records and a dinner jacket.

His hopeless pep talk to wayward punk stepson made me laugh; I'm not very good at this, try not to upset your mother and have you got a joint?

:) Amazing chap, even when Hattie was having an affair, he let the bloke ruddy live with them!!

Probably told this one before but John and Joan lived not far from us and were regarded as part of the scenery. It was difficult to tell though where John ended and Sergeant Wilson began. (When you're seven it's hard to make a distinction between the person and the character.) Lovely bloke. Consumed an awful lot of Polo mints as I recall.

I saw the documentary too. I didn't know about the BAFTA for that Dennis Potter thing he did. Yet another great British comedy actor that could have had a great career in dramatic roles too, but didn't.

It's strange how American comedians/comic actors manage to balance the two, but it rarely happens over here.

A repeat showing on BBC4 this Wednesday for the documentary It's all Been Rather Lovely, followed by Traitor, the Dennis Potter play for which he won a BAFTA.
