Writing Environment

Just out of interest, do people have any kind of special area of the house that they write in, or a place they find makes working easier? I recently stuck a bunch of cork boards across a wall and have been using it to put scenes in order (with different colour cards for A, B & C plots) and being able to work from something so visual has really helped me. Anyone got any useful hints or tips?

Yeah, similar to you, I usually try to write out my whole chapter plan/list of scenes on one piece of massive paper. So I can see it all at once. Then stick it on the wall.

I like that, I may have to adopt it. In the past I've written more organically.

I wrote organically but the smell was terrible

At one point I went further and had different colour pins for big plot points and big joke moments...

I come up with ideas better when I'm walking rather than sitting down, I think it's because it gives my body something to do, so it's not bored, and allows my mind to wander without distractions

I've tried taking walks, since so many people say they get all their ideas doing it, and it didn't work at all! Couldn't think about anything. I just got distracted too easily by everything around me.

Depends where you're walking I guess, I sometimes stroll round somewhere quiet to try and get the clutter out of my head. Doesn't always work though!

I actually managed to do some successful thinking on a walk this week. Until a deer crashed out of a hedge and gave me a small heart attack.

...but now the pilot of your deer sitcom's reached a whole new place, right?

:D

Mostly in the freezer. That way my ideas get preserved without having to do much. I did try the washing machine when I was really short of them and they came tumbling out. Unfortunately I had lost most of them when I got out. Along with my socks Angry On the advice of a famous writer I read, I'm going to try some writing in a fondue dish in the oven. They said it's a real melting pot!
