Sci-fi/fantasy/supernatural sitcoms

What's the feeling about this sort of thing?

I remember reading somewhere that they were quite frowned upon, particularly from new writers.

Anyone have any insight on this?

I think it was only frowned upon because everyone was writing one... and Radio 4 didn't want any more for a while. I'd avoid setting something in space, as Red Dwarf is back later this year, and Radio 4 now has a new sitcom set in space too (Story)
