True. I used to cover my face and hands in aftershave immediately after sneaking cigarettes at school. Some people thought I was a poof.

And we haven't even started on the shoes.

Quote: Kenneth @ February 18 2012, 11:33 AM GMTThe newly rich mainland Chinese are falling for this shit in a big way. A $53 50ml bottle of Estee Lauder perfume sells for $120 in China. Genuine Hermes handbags and such crap are also almost double-priced in China. One of my Chinese flatmates asked me if I could, on my next trip "to the West", buy her a heap of designer perfumes and handbags. The other Chinese flatmate said she was stupid and superficial for wanting that stuff. No, replied the first, she only plans to re-sell it to gullible rich women for a big profit. Fair enough for French women to buy this stuff - it is their culture. But Asian women are being conned into thinking this sort of crap will make them happier and more popular.
Agree that mass marketing of overpriced aspirational products is damaging to individuals and society, but sometimes people just choose to spend an occasional sum of money on one product because they like it. Some of my favourites are Body Shop scents which are not as costly as designer, and free samples can last for a long time. Lots of people make their own perfumes, or it's an easy gift for someone to buy. Equating liking a perfume with being a 'gullible rich woman' is rather far off the mark.

Seriously, I was only joking. I am actually finding this thread very interesting and funny (in a good way). I now know to go to George for bras and Primark for cheap knickers with an enforced crotch.
Don't forget Matalan for knickers! 3 for £5!

You need to check out lamebook.
I am addicted to the bathing garden on Etsy. I bought some wax snap bars from there and the are mega strong. They fill the whole house with scent and they look soooooo cute.
Anyone like Sephora?

Don't skimp on your underwear, zooo. It's false economy.
I'm very poor. It's either wear Matalan or nothing.

That isn't new. That has been going on for decades. It doesn't just happen in China. It happens in many countries.

I bet you are like me and treat yourself to 3 pairs of topshop socks for £7 though.

I was talking about rich mainland Chinese women willingly paying double price for designer perfumes and handbags. Go to Oxford St next time the big fashion houses and whatever are having sales. Notice all the pushy mainland Chinese women who have flown over to buy this stuff. I find it fascinating that a proudly 'communist' country has such grossly inequitable wealth distribution, while the Chinese government does not even provide free health care or education.
You know I haven't had a girly day out for a very long time. Bit of shopping, lunch, and hair dressers.
We should have a meet one day just for the wimmin. Go for cupcakes, shopping, and pillow fights.

It is new! My flatmate made the request for me to buy a bunch of designer perfumes and handbags only two days ago! Previous flatmates in other countries in the past never made such requests. The Chinese are getting richer and more eager to show off their wealth.
