British Comedy Guide

US Brit here! Looking for recommendations!

Heya guys and gals,

I was born in the UK but grew up in the US. Fortunately I grew up on Fawlty Towers, Black Adder, and 'Allo 'Allo!. Aside from The Simpsons, Venture Brothers, The Daily Show, and The Boondocks, I generally abhor US comedies.

I got girl troubles recently Teary and I found that Britcoms are the best solutions to wipe that girl out of my mind.

I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations (I'm only seeing a trickle of good ones), here's a snippet of stuff I like:

Fawtly Towers
Only Fools and Horses
Father Ted
Black Books
The IT Crowd
'Allo 'Allo!
That Mitchell and Webb Look
A Bit of Fry and Laurie
Darkplace
The Mighty Boosh
The Young Ones
Bottom
Monty Python
Red Dwarf

Anything else anyone can recommend?

Thanks!

Yes Minister has provided me with wonderful escapism in the past - helps if you're into British politics, but not a requirement.

How about Dad's Army?

Armstrong & Miller (sketches in a similar style to Mitchell & Webb)
Not The Nine O'Clock News (sketches - some of it is a bit dated now, but it's still very funny)
Brass Eye (Spoof documentary series)
Nathan Barley (satirical sitcom)
Spaced (sitcom)

nb also look for Monkey Dust an animated sketch show.

Also easily both the funniest and darkest sketch show to come out from either side of the atlantic in decades.

Minder. Start at the beginning and avoid the remake.

Yes Minder is fantastic and has actually got better with age.

But Monkey Dust everyone should watch it.

Peep Show
The Day Today
Jam
Friday Night Dinner
Grandma's House.

First off: Welcome to the site. It's a funky bunch of peeps here and I hope you have fun :)

Big Train
The Fast Show
Open All Hours
Dear John...

- It's not British but if you have "girl troubles" you might enjoy the DVD "Elephant in the Room" by Patrice O'Neil :)

Not British, but the original 'Kath & Kim' is worth a look.
Green Wing.

Game On :)

Seen and loved Brass Eye. Got Peep Show on my to watch list. Saw the first ep of Spaced and I'm still not into it - should I give it more time?

No, it makes less sense the more you watch it. Give up on it nice and early.

Have you tried Coupling? Very like Friends only even worse. After you've filled several buckets with vomit you won't want to be bothered by such things as girlfriends anymore. Cheers.

Yes, Spaced is worth a full watch.

Spaced is great.

Agreed.

However, if you didn't like episode one I am not sure it's the show for you....for me it was love at first sight. I would give it at least one more episode just to be sure.

I love Spaced but it's a bit of a Marmite show.

Also at the time it was cutting edge which doesn't help.
