Gervais - what a complete c*nt. Page 4

You might be right there ... maybe I was subjected to too many David Brents in 20 years in Sales & Marketing...

I was operating at very senior levels in some very big companies and the type of people you meet up there have a lot of Brent like qualities for real, I kid you not... but it's not funny...

No offence meant to 'The Office' lovers by the way... my original post was just my opinion politely expressed...

:)

By the way, any Ronnie Corbett fans in ... I know someone who plays golf with him ... apparently he IS a C... who'd-a thunk it, he's seems such a nice guy in 'The two Ronnies' doesn't he?

Frankie xxx Cool

There is a school of thought about Gervais, the school of thought being that his act contains a lot of stuff which is racist, sexist, homophobic et cetra, but by claiming it is ironic, he gets away with it.

Many people think parts of his stand-up, such as believing that Schindler's List was a blue film were utterly offensive. It is one of the main reasons that Gervais has been given more Comedy Tumbleweed Awards than anyone else.

Godot

I saw Live Earth and I thought that he was being his usual self and name-dropping ironically - he just said it a bit more dead-pan and left it hanging there.

Any time I've seen him bigging himself up has been with his tongue very firmly in his cheek in the same way as he always cracks on that Merchant is the "junior" in their partnership. I don't think that there is any doubt that he sees SM as his equal.

Don't know if you heard him on Desert Island discs but he came accross as a really nice guy when he dropped his stage persona and opened up a bit.

Mind, I don't understand the relevence of him being fat or a multi-millionaire in your post though. I assume that he is a bit overweight as he puts more calories into his body than he uses up in a day.

And ironically, one possible cause for this could be his multi-millionaire status. For as a multi-millionaire he probably gets a lot of tempting offers to dine out with his showbiz pals at award cermonies etc, making it difficult to find time to go to the gym or stay in and eat healthy salads while watching Corrie. Whistling nnocently

On the good guy bad guy thing. I think that we all have the ability to be good and think we are lovely and cuddly and we also have the ability, and all frequently are I suspect, total bastards when we want to be.

Why we would think that this basic human trait should be missing from somebody's personal make up just because they are in the public eye amazes me.

If you want to see the human condition warts 'n' all, just watch a group of small kids playing. It's shocking!

You're right there, kids are c***'s!!!

Quoting myself because some people who posted here didn't read what I said and I don't like being accused of being jealous of Ricky Gervais. The only writers I've ever been jealous of are W H Auden and Ted Hughes and they're both dead. And neither of them were c*nts, unlike Ricky.

I DID NOT SAY GERVAIS WAS NOT FUNNY. HE IS FUNNY.

I SAID SOMETHING ELSE ABOUT HIM.

It was inspired by watching him on Live Earth, telling Jonathan Ross how he didn't want to do this gig or the Diana one but he did it because the Princes, Rob Reiner, Christopher Guest etc.asked him personally. It was a embarrassing as anything from Extras. Even J Ross was embarrassed.

Just before the interview he did some improv and used the f-word before 7.30pm, for which Ross had to apologise.

My post only seems harsh if you didn't see him, which it seems most of you didn't.

I believe you that you're not jealous of him, but that's how it came across originally.
Any valid points you might have are kind of negated when you then slag someone off for 'still being fat'.
:)

I did see the interview, I don't think Ross was remotely embarrassed, they're practically best mates...now he's famous ;).

Everyone who works in an office recognises all those characters.

I don't. Maybe I work in the wrong type of office though.

And many people seem to be defending him with the argument that it's all an act. A stage persona. A performance. Fair enough. But the question(s) I'd like to ask is why does he feel the need to constantly portray this persona? Why is it so similar to Brent, and indeed Milman? Why not something a bit, you know, different, new, unique? Why can't he be himself? Is he really utterly boring? Or even more of a tit?

Answers on a postcard. Or below.

I just said, he's himself on the hundreds of radio shows he's made.
And he's himself in a lot of interviews. Depends on who is interviewing him, I think.

I'm a big fan, but that aside there's a BBC Breakfast News interview with him somewhere on Youtube where he talks about controversy in his shows and how he hopes people see the irony. In this interview he isn't playing his comedic character and comes across as sincere, very intelligent and caring about his art which comedy is. I always knew he was all of these but I think this interview was a good illustration of that. I'll look for the link later.

Indeed you did. But that seems to be a minority of his appearances. So what about the rest of the time? And the question on why the character is so similar to Brent and Milman stands, either way.

Well that's the major point I think. I don't even see Millman and Brent as being similar, whereas others do.

Let's all agree to disagree, and have a nice picnic.

Besides, lots of comedians do that. Harry Hill always interviews dressed as Harry Hill. I've never seen him out of character in my life.
And Leigh Francis only started appearing as himself very recently.

I think The Office was good but for Extras they just nicked all the best ideas from Larry David and tried to make it more English.

Will there be sweeties?

Yes!

And scotch eggs. But you can have all of them.

Mmmm... Scotch Eggs... now you're talking!
