William Goldman's Butch Cassidy and the The Sundance Kid screenplay knocks most of these theories into a cocked hat. It's the most glorious piece of overwriting in the history of screenwriting - at one point he calls for The Longest Tracking Shot In The History Of The World - but what he does, crucially, is capture the spirit and tone of the film. That, to me, is the key.
