Why do people believe in God(s)? Page 6

Can I join? The fox has deserted me this year so I've given up Fox-worship. And I did see a Real Otter on my holidays last year.

:D

I have met otter (sorry, Otter) researchers who have never seen an otter in the wild. Otter-worship like all true religion should rely on interpreting signs. *pictures zooo and AGJO sniffing spraints*

A sign, a sign!

(Spraint cocktails, darling, this is a classy cult)

If human beings have the gift of thinking for themselves and using logical reasoning then why does any God based religion exsist.

And yet God based religion is treat as an absolute truth by some cultures. Millions and millions of people believing and worshipping every day.
Do those millions know something I don't - have I missed a trick.

I can't, I already worship beaver. Smarmy

Dam you

Dam you

Laughing out loud

I do, I even asked for a Tarka Masala down the curry house;
"Don't you mean a tikka Masala, sir?"
"No, this one is a little otter"

Beat me to it. Git. *shakes fist*

And that's what I have to add to the whole 'God' debate. Beyond the fact that otters are undeniably cute and were without doubt my favourite empty enclosure at Battersea Zoo when I was a mere snip of a boy.

I had an otter curry but it was boring, infact it was Tarka Daal

Flawed thread from a flawed poster.

I hate these smug ignorant threads picking on religion, especially as they seem to come from such a flawed ignorant perspective on one argument.

Yes a few religious sects do fanatically believe all their texts are entirely accurate, that it's all like gaining merit badges to go to heaven and avoid hell.

Most view religion as a way of organising one's self within one's community. And structuring a journey into their own spiritual space and that of the world around them

And yes I am an aetheist or atleast an agnostic. It's just pretty central to me, to know exactly what it is I don't believe in.

Feel I should apologise abit for this intemperate statement. I grew up in a ministerial family. So the route for me into aetheism wasn't always the easiest one, and at the same time I've kept contacts with friends of diferent but profound faiths. Som of whom I think are a bit mad and some I'm quite jealous of.

So maybe it's a bit of a sensitive subject, and perhaps Leevil in fairness you do sometimes unintentionally seem to diminuate things. Apologies if I snapped abit on a Friday afternoon.

Awww. *ruffles both your hair*

(Sooty and Leevil's that is, not both sooty's hairs. He's got more than two.)

Otters are actually very persuasive.

Look at their little faces!

No hard feelings, old boy. Didn't want to cause trouble or upset. I also sympathize with the anti-religious bashing, yes I had a go myself a bit. But lately I've been turned off by Ricky Gervais and his constant in-your-face atheism. It's very hypocritical and smug. Change the record, as the old saying goes. Put shuffle on, as the new version now reads.

Here come those hard feelings... Whistling nnocently

It's easy to dismiss God or Gods but we only know a small part of what brings or keeps us here.
Evolutions all well & good, but that starting point will remain a mystery.

I've read the whole of this thread and it's been quite interesting and lively. Not always a bad thing.

There is no answer obviously until a great big Otter claw comes down from the clouds and turns us all into fish.

I'm at a point where I really don't know what point I'm at ? I love the quantum physics and particle zoo stuff and at the same time it's interesting that some leading scientists are edging toward some external force as being a factor in the universe. Others completely reject it. However I'm coming around to the fact that we may be part of something that is 'bigger' than ourselves. Some kind of external factor which at least set the Universe going. Tomorrow it will be different????

I wonder what would happen if we could prove there was a supernatural force behind the universe or that we got here by another means?
No matter what the "proof" turned out to be I think there would be people who would not want to believe or accept.

Maybe there are things that we are better off not knowing.

Definitely. Life's complicated enough as it is!

I find it interesting that there are scientists who have strong religious beliefs and others who don't believe the two can exist together.
