Why do people believe in God(s)? Page 3

I think Leevil should take that personally, seeing as he posted last.

"Believe in God and you'll get to go to heaven" "Don't believe in him and you'll go to hell". Who believes in hell but not God or heaven? Anyway...

Flawed thread from a flawed poster.

I hate these smug ignorant threads picking on religion, especially as they seem to come from such a flawed ignorant perspective on one argument.

Yes a few religious sects do fanatically believe all their texts are entirely accurate, that it's all like gaining merit badges to go to heaven and avoid hell.

Most view religion as a way of organising one's self within one's community. And structuring a journey into their own spiritual space and that of the world around them

And yes I am an aetheist or atleast an agnostic. It's just pretty central to me, to know exactly what it is I don't believe in.

Ignorance is asking questions now? Odd that. Ignorance is willingness not to learn about others perspective, surely?

Let's not get bogged down in whether or not a God exists.

So much for that. :|

Considering that we're the only species on the planet to even believe in a god, then it must be true. Who's gonna contradict us? The otters? I think not!

Talking monkey people FTW!

Believing in God is an entirely logical position. The prospect of an afterlife acts as a consolation, and if you are wrong you stand to lose nothing, while if you are right you get clouds and harps and shit. The poor old atheist does not even get the satisfaction of saying, "I told you so."

There are probably better uses of your free time though than religion; and seriously you have to worry about the insecurity issues of a God who needs people telling him how wonderful he is all the time. I have visions of spending the afterlife saying things like, "no seriously, genital herpes was a great idea, and, hey, the crusades were not your fault, not really..."

It's hard not to bring up the existence/non-existence of God in a topic like this

Otters are actually very persuasive.

Look at their little faces!

I mean ignorance as in the generalisation that you chose to base your rambling screed.

Ignorance is saying religion is about avoding hell and gaining heaven. Which hasn't been part of any realistic mainstream theology in actually centuries.

Bit harsh soots, no-one's being smug or purposefully ignorant that I can see. Which means it's probably me. But I still defend the right of people to have conversations about things they find puzzling without being admonished for picking on anyone.

How do you know other creatures don't have religion?

I am delighted for Leevil to explore the universe of meaning that surrounds us. But starting from such a flawed, innacurate and frankly ignorant stance is pointless.

Like taking part in a 3 legged race with Andre the Giant and Warwick Davis.
