At least those Military Wives prevented another bloody Cowell Christmas.

Because BBC reality shows are so much more palatable

You can definitely leave out the Girls Aloud.

I would absolutely go for the Mel and Kim version of Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree!

Don't you worry on both counts! :)

Mel & Kim is a given - I was just using that as an example. Just because there are tracks listed above that doesn't mean that they will be on the list - that's just what's on that particular compilation.

Anyone see a glaring error? I will put Frankie's version of the Power of Love on list rather than Gabrielle Aplin's and I might for date range purposed include Somewhere only we know from the John Lewis ad but I've not decided on that yet.

The first thing I was going to suggest. It's essential. Also add Bing Crosby to the Bowie credit if you include that one but "White Christmas" beats it. Risk adding Yoko to the Lennon credit. Kate Bush did "December Will Be Magic Again" but is it really a Christmas song? I prefer Eartha Kitt's version of "Santa Baby". It's the classic version and recognisable to most ages via "Mad About The Boy" in Lazzard's commercial. Maybe add "Someday at Christmas" by Stevie Wonder? And do have at least one Spector track. Good luck with it all.

That's good stuff! Defo need Spector in there.

I did wonder about things like Kate Bush but if I include Power of Love (or Stay another day) I have to consider it because neither of those are Christmas songs. In Frankie's case it was Paul Morley and their label ZTT insisting on festive video that turned it into Christmas song.

I hadn't considered it like that but you are totally right. I was never a Frankie fan but I really love that record. It is one of my many Christmas favourites. Another is that John and Yoko song. Listening to it yesterday - how many times would I have heard it? - I was struck for the first time by how it's her voice that makes it beyond special. Implausible? I'd have thought so - but listen again to it with that thought!

If you are going to have Mary's Boy Child it should be Harry Belafonte.

What about the mad version of '12 Days of Christmas' where everything goes haywirs, the geese end up fighting the swans or something like that? I think it was an Irishman who did it.

Christmas Dream-Perry Como. If it hasn't got kids singing in German it can't be a Christmas song. It's the law.
