That's fine for ideas, but don't you sometimes come up with a perfectly worded sentence that you can't risk losing?
I have to repeat it to myself over and over until I get home. Either that or write it on the back of my hand in eyeliner.

I'm kind of cavalier in that way... ;)

But seriously, I treat the wording in the same way as the idea. If I don't remember it (as I do, say, with lines in movies... and books that I have read) then I don't worry about it. If it's strong enough, it'll come back to me. Also, it's very rare for me to get the actual words in my head before I've sat down at my laptop anyway. Up to that point it's mainly ideas.

This is probably why my output is relatively small (gad you can hear the jokes from a mile off!). It takes me absolutely ages to write anything... but I'm OK with that. I self-edit as I'm writing too... rather than write a draft, edit and then re-draft and so on.

It'd be interesting to hear what methods other people employ...

By the way... would it be easier to carry a pen? :)

No - use your eyeliner pencil.

As many people have said though - if you can't remember it - it's not funny!

Also I've got a fairly primitive mobile (to go with my primitive PC) but it has an Organiser on it and I put things in to remind me when I get home. Only odd words or lines obviously but it helps.

i used to always carry a pad and pen to write stuff down but then i'd lose the pen or forget the book or the pen would leak and ruin my lovely trousers. so i stopped doing that. although i still get a thrill of child-like excitement whenever i buy a notebook.
i have one a4 sized notebook which lives in my writer's satchell which lives in my cellar. everything goes in there or straight on to the computer.

editing is a mixed bag. i tend to edit as i'm going along. but even when finished it will need at least 2 more rewrites before its fit to be sent out. and then there's usually a good 6 more rewrites after that.

I'm feeling generous today and having read this thread I'd like to offer some lucky person a feed line that could end in pure comedy gold.

I use my dictaphone......

Leevil? This one's yours, I think... :)

Ed's already used his.

I use my dictaphone......

... to record the voices in my head. I'm going to get a dictaphone but to record my gigs, not my thoughts, so I can bother people by posting it on the web somewhere. Its true that if you remeber it it is funny but its easier and safer to write it down and read it in the morning.
