I think it's often better if the person who writes it can perform it as well.
Then it stays closer to what it was meant to be.

I'm sure Rossiter would have done a good job though if asked.

Interesting thread this. Thinking about it I'm pretty sure Rossitter would have played the part of Fawlty with great aplomb. He was a hugely talented and diverse actor, so I doubt if he would have been out of his depth.
