Ralph Bates

Does anyone think Ralph Bates was good as John in Dear John....? I thought he was good in a comedy role and if he had not passed away, could have done more comedy.

Edited by Aaron.

Certainly. A fabulous performance throughout a terrific show.

As he has passed away unfortunately he can't.

But that's exactly what bond said.

Ralph Bates' performance in Dear John.... was simply wonderful. He played the part with an understated pathos that allowed you to sympathise with John without pitying him.

Yes, being dead does (sadly) seem to be a bit of a handicap when it comes to developing one's comedy acting portfolio. Only using the living in sitcom is basically just another form of racism.

On an unrelated note, am I the only one who feels it's a great pity Dermot Morgan has never landed any more comic roles after his tour de force performance as Father Ted?

He was versatile and talented actor. He bought a moving vulnerablilty to his Dear John role as he did providing some gravitas in some very silly late period Hammer Horror films.

He was a descendant of Louis Pasteur, dontcha know.
