Vegetarianism

There seem to be a lot of vegetarians here. Why? Is it a moral thing, a health thing, or what?

I'm a 'reverse vegetarian', I won't eat fish but I'll eat veg & meat. Yum.

For me, it's a Star Trek thing.

Were Star Trek folk vegetarians?

I haven't noticed anyone else but Leevil being a vegetarian, do I just mention it too often?!

No, you don't. Think I only noticed it tonight, but I thought there were quite a few.

Regardless of numbers, I'm still interested in the reasons.

Thanks for reassurance!

I should first state that I don't mind other people eating meat, no-one I spend time with is veggie, but my reasons are

It hurts me to think that another living creature has been scared or experienced pain for my meal when there are plenty of other things I can eat

I think it's a bit grim to be munching on corpse

The health and science reasons seem to back my decision up

Whenever I have this debate someone goes on about having teeth that can eat meat which seems desperate and I'd be embarassed to be associated with that view

And someone else says 'it's being part of the food chain' like popping to Sainsburys is hunting and gathering

Likewise.

Society tends to frown on people who kill things for fun, which is not a million miles away from eating meat.

You're basically asking somebody else to cut the throat of a fellow mammal just so you can briefly have a pleasant taste in your mouth.

I do like the taste, though.

I guess one man's fun is another man's survival.

Now I want a thick, juicy steak. Lovey

Very few people HAVE to kill animals for survival. There are plenty of other things to eat.

Humans would have gone extinct had it not been for their ability to hunt and raise animals for food. It's perfectly natural and anyone who tries to tell me otherwise will have the blood of a cow on their hands because the first thing a "meat is murder" comment makes me want to do is cram a chunk of tasty, tasty flesh into my mouth.

Yes they might well have done, but we're not cave dwellers anymore!

I eat plenty of meat and I'm not saying people shouldn't, but I *am* saying it has nothing to do with 'survival' anymore. (Certainly for us lot anyway). So it's a rubbish excuse.

Say it's because you love the taste, and be honest.

That's what she said!

Seriously though. This is one of my main reasons for being put off meat. Is it worth an animal dying so I can enjoy a burger for 5 mins? If I was desperate, I would eat meat before you ask. But I can make my own perfectly good vegetarian burgers for example with only the slaughter of several plants and seeds. I know, I'm a monster!
