Steve Jobs 1955 -2011 Page 2

Some people on Twitter are trying to get a cheap giggle by abbreviating "pancreatic cancer" to "PC".

I've been surprised by some of the bile and general ignorance about his role in the history of personal computing.

:| A general sad thought because its affected me.

Has there been much coverage over there of the "Occupy Wall Street" protests that are spreading across our cities? I wonder if the protesters will express their anger with billionaires like Steve Jobs (RIP) and George Soros? Will they smash their Chinese-sweatshop-made iPhones and demand that Soros stop funding lefty causes? Nah, this is just election year politics and all you need to do is substitute the word "Republican" every time Wall Street and rich people are mentioned.

Well I'm not going to make any Steve Jobs jokes, they're not PC.

Very moved by some of the tributes around the web, but also quite surprised by how many people don't see Jobs as anything other than a man in a turtleneck holding up a phone or an expensive aluminium laptop. I guess that's how history works.

Anyway for the people who were still shitting and pissing themselves when it happened here's some screenshots of the first Mac (1984) against the latest PC of the time - the IBM PC AT.

The real importance of Jobs is right there, he took us away from that green screen and it's command line interface, which stopped most people from using a computer and made so much creativity possible.

Yes but 1980s geeks wouldn't have looked as geeky if they had not been staring at a screen of green code.

Ok Ok
I've got one now.

They were going to bury Steve Jobs at Sea, but they couldn't get him to synch properly

Nice :)

I started this thread to remember Steve who's had quite a profound effect on all our lives not so you could offload some shit jokes.

Actually wasn't sure who this man was when someone said he had died. To be honest unless you are an Apple Pip I can't see why his death is such a big thing. Deaths are always sad in some respects yes, but I can't see why he was a "visionary".

I always wanted to own an apple product, but as a hetrosexual I don't think I'm allowed.

Yeah, using technology invented by Xerox.

I thought you were a f**king journalist. The GUI and the mouse were invented by Standford. Xerox produced the first icon based GUI.

Apple invented the menu bar concept, overlapping windows and the double-click.

The Mac was not put together by Jobs on his own, of course not, although he has more than 300 patents in his own name, but his thinking has shaped every aspect of personal computing as it stands today, and without Apple Windows would not exist.
