That's one of the problems with those southern 'open mike' sessions!

Quote: Safdar Shah @ March 2 2012, 2:19 PM GMTThe BBC Muslim writers website mentioned above is plain Islamoracist. It reads "Use your weapon".
It says that on a lot of pages. Under or above a pen
Isn't there positive discrimination against Muslim writing anyway? Aren't you more likely to get your work performed if you create a Muslim-centric piece? As long as it's not too controversial.
This kind of thing really makes my blood boil.
How in any way is this fair? It is specifically seeking Muslim writers therefore disregarding writers from any other religion. Now lets reverse that. An opportunity for only Christian followers? No chance.
If people want integration, they need to stop segregation. This is segregation at it's worst. You cannot put a barrier in the way of anybodys opportunitys by using their religion as an excuse.
Anyway, are regular competitions not open to people from all beliefs and backgrounds? I always thought there were...
There are plenty of competitions that look for applications based on religion, location, gender, age, particular life experiences.
Who exactly do you mean by 'people'? The 23% of the world's population who are Muslim? The 4.6% of the UK's population? Or the handful of people involved in this competition?
This is really not segregation at it's worst
Here's my entry

Well I am yet to see a competition asking directly for Christian writers. Maybe there is one somewhere but I have not seen one.
By 'people' I mean 'people' - I didn't realise it had any other meaning?
I was directing it at anybody who aspires to be a comedy writer, regardless of their religion. I just don't see why it matters what religion somebody is.
While I'm on Toby's side I have to disagree that this is "segregation at its worst", historically speaking.

Ok - Maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration. There have been far worse incidents across the globe admittedly.
Just a bit!
It's also worth noting, while I don't agree with parts of the legislation, that what the BBC is doing is all above board...
"Positive action that allows employers to select candidates from under-represented groups is also provided. Where there is a choice between two or more equally-qualified candidates, provisions make it clear that positive action can be used in service delivery."

By citing 'people' as the cause for the segregation you perceive in this context you appear to be distinguishing between 'us' and 'them' thereby contributing to the segregation you claim to denounce. Apologies if this was not your intention, may have come across harsher than you expected, what with your blood boiling.
I'm not a fan of religion in general so I'm not anyone's side, but I doubt some of the comments on this thread would have been made had it been a call for submissions to one of the hugely selling Christian inspirational stories books or a competition asking for, for example, Irish people to contribute to an anthology about their upbringings or one of the competitions about, say, Australians living abroad.
All of which exist, along with many, many others that aim to tell stories from different people, particularly people who may not have as much access to or encouragement regarding being part of a creative community.
Quote: AJGO @ October 4 2011, 4:25 PM GMTIt's not a BBC opportunity, it's just featured on Writers Room much like other geographical, gender, or cultural based opportunities are.
F**king Irish Christians with their f**king writing competitions.
Why don't they write a sequel to the f**king book of Kells.

No that was definitely not my intention, your apology is accepted. My blood is flowing at an average temperature, it was just a figure of speech. I think maybe sometimes I come across too brutal - Time for some Branflakes.
I don't see what the problem is.
Most opportunities, I've seen, on the BBC writers' room aren't open to everybody. Some for 'young writers' some for 'regional' writers some for people who've had credits some for those who haven't. Why single this one out particularly?
