Fresh Meat - Series 1 Page 9

F**ked up student lecturer relationships are a staple of life and comedy.

Basically sour old academic who failed at life over awes naieve but nubile students.

Of all the things that criticise, that would seem one area they got right on the nail.

It's annual Sooty agreement time. These things do happen, they've been part of uni folklore for a long time, and I see this storyline as a parody of all the tabloid stories there've been about naughty student - letcher flings. She gets good marks from tutor then jealous student reads her essays, laughs at how bad they are, complains to head and the dalliance is then exposed. That's my guess on how it might end anyway.

The portrayals are OTT tho, the tutor in qestion swearing at Vlod in class is just as much a sackable no no. They wouldn't get away with talking to students like that. The series is, in great Channel 4 tradition, very souped up from reality.

I'm glad I've given this series a bit of time to settle in because I have really enjoyed the last couple of episodes. I feel I can invest more in the characters now. Jack Whitehall was particularly good in this latest episode and Howard is brilliant. Not too sure about Kingsley though. Also starting to see some of Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong's classic lines, that make Peep Show so great, creeping in much more.

I came across this thread as I was trying to find a quote from last night's episode (also because I'm procrastinating doing my uni work) and I can't believe you're dismissing it for not being believable?!

1) One of the most uptight, prudish girls from my school had a break down recently because things hadn't worked out with one of her 38 year old architecture lecturers who she was cheating on her BF with. Surely we all know that the girls who go on about how sexually liberated they are, are the ones who in the bedroom refuse to give blowjobs and lie back and think of England, and that it's the shy insecure ones who are oh so eager to please? OREGON.

2) I find the show so funny because so much of what the characters say and do, I've seen and heard 1st hand (admittedly not with my uni frinds but with the ones who failed their first year and now claim benefits and sell drugs - who knows, maybe that's season 2).

It's a great show, FAR more believable than Skins has ever been but with all the wonderful cringing anxiety of Peep Show! If you don't like it don't watch it, and find a show you do like to give some positive comments about. That's all.

That's not the way things work here. Or indeed in the world generally. :) And if every show got positive comments only, they'd be wondering why they weren't winning every award going and getting automatic recommissions. Free speech leads to balance and the right things being rewarded, Charlie. As I'm sure you're aware.

I do agree with you but can't help but think that with all the things going on in the world at this moment all our anger and frustration could be directed into debates that would have far more impact on our lives than a television show getting awards/recommissioned.

I'm not a comedian, but I do love comedy because it's escapism and it's healthy to take time out of one's day to laugh and feel good, and my comment was not meant to limit free speech but to express my frustration that I can't find a discussion that celebrates the good aspects of a 60min comedy show instead of nitpicking at all the things people find wrong with it. I know you'll enjoy tearing me to shreds and that I clearly am in the wrong place if what I'm after is a bit of light debate about Jack Whitehall's character, but if you do know of any blogs where people talk about things that they find funny, not about how shit everything is, please do send me a link.

At least half the comments on this thread have been complimentary! Why concentrate on the few negative ones?

Will do :) BTW, I think Fresh Meat has good and bad qualities, not too sure in which quantities yet. Is it entertaining? Certainly. Is it popular and successful? Yes. Is it rigidly lifelike? Er...

Agreed.

If it's improved I'll give it another go

I agree, it is odd to watch something, then complain about it in a forum. Things I wouldn't normally do. I have watched all of the eps so far, why I don't know. Maybe it has something about it. The Uni setting has a great wealth of possible comidic situations.

But, this series just doesn't bring anything new to the table. Not the most important thing, I know, but it really does tie itself to other series' tics and quirks. Whilst never seeming like it's confident to become it's own self.

I do agree about Jack Whitehall though, he is the best thing in it, and at times gives a personal and 3D side to his character that the others don't manage. Maybe this is because he is playing himself more than the others.

I hope it gets better, I really do.

I think one of the issues for me was there wasn't a central character or 2 characters I could really identify with.

This show has def improved. I think the problem was that there were too many characters to introduce and it has taken this long to do it properly.

I dunno, I always think of you when Oregon is on screen.

So great I have to share your attention whilst you furiously masturbate, way to make a guy feel good about himself.

Just caught up with this episode, was by far my favourite, really good. C4 player has next episode up!
