The most underrated comedy of all time? Page 17

I have been watching the sketch show Spoons again. I think it's great. Very simple but great. Just as good as ManStrokeWoman.

Rab C Nesbitt.

I hear you there. Well worth struggling with his thick Glaswegian accent. But on the topic of Scottish sitcoms;

The High Life gets 8.1/10 on IMDb but only ran for a year. Any ideas why? It stared a young camp Alan Cumming as an air steward, back in the days he was allowed to flounce (before going to Hollywood).

I saw a few and thought it was funny - so long ago...

Just followed your link, might look it up on Amazon.

The best thing Nicholas Burns has done.

I think you'll find that is Absolute Power.

Ooh, very good. Also, very underrated.

Perhaps not the most underrated of all time but I think that 'Pete VS Life' is rather underrated.

Always very funny.

My Family and Two Pints of Lager have been on forever but that's not an indication of quality...think it needs something other than the length of its run.

Had not thought of that ... fair point. gunna rewatch it.

Operation Good Guys - Excellent mockumentary pre-dating the Office and all that have come since.

Ideal - Great range of characters for such a small setting.

Soap - I think this is one show that would be an excellent candidate for a remake.

Really enjoyed reading your posts on this one - some great memories coming back to me, a few I'd forgotten!

I would go for: Colin's Sandwich, The New Statesman, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Ever Decreasing Circles, Wait Till Your Father Gets Home and Early Doors.

The Beiderbecke Trilogy

'Orrible is an outstanding comedy which only ran for one series of six 30 minute episodes and a feature length episode. It was shown on BBC2 in 2001 which is the same year The Office was shown on the same channel and featured Johnny Vaughan as a likeable but work shy, ne'er do-well wideboy wannabe and Ricky Grover who was his overprotective best mate and slightly psychotic doorman. The elusive William Boyde made a rare television appearance as an ex SAS pub landlord who was always telling war stories. Written by Vaughan and Ed Allen who is the son of Dave Allan and directed by Dominic Brigstocke it's not everyone's cup of tea but I loved it and still find it funny. No laughter track either, which helped.

This show was outstanding and nobody I know remembers it. I thought it was ahead of its time and I do wonder if Gervais got the idea of the mockumentary from that? I know it had been done before OGG but I can see similarities between that and The Office.
Also I seem to recall that the guy who played Strings was actually one of the guitarists in Adam and the Ants originally and the guy who played De Sade's mate who rarely spoke had never acted and was actually a marine friend of his who'd been in the gulf war.

Anyway my choice for underrated is Kids In The Hall. I like to think if Channel 4 hadn't stuck it on at ridiculous o'clock in the morning (usually about half three) during the 90s then they would have been much bigger over here.

Oh my God, I loved that so much.
It's so old I only have it on video (somewhere).

My step sister lives over in Canada so I've been able to get my hands on all their DVDs, the live show version of Sir Simon and Hecubus is hilarious because Kevin McDonald and Dave Foley keep adlibbing trying to trip the other up with McDonald going as far as to actually grab hold of Foleys bollocks mid sketch and clearly giving them a bit of a squeeze.

I managed to get Bruce Mcullochs autobiography the other week and read it in one go, it's well worth checking out if you can get a copy, I just hope some of the other four do theirs now.
