I Choked, Bombed and Died... in that order. Page 3

If I was to go on stage I'd watch DeNiro's King of Comedy, if the audience didn't laugh I'd kidnap them until they did...

That's one brilliant film....Jack, take some time, but not too much time, to let the worst of the raw feelings settle...but then get back on the bike as soon as you can, book your next gig, and it'll be a whole different experience next time I'm sure of it.

King of Comedy is amazing, especially the slyly ambiguous ending. Does Pupkin achieve success on the back of his infamy, or is that just another of his deluded fantasies?

I always took it found fame on the back of what he did, the film got the whole fame hungry, do anything to get a break thing to the extreme.
I love the scene at the beginning when Rupert pesters the receptionist and despite what she says he still just plonks himself in the waiting area for hours...that film is so funny.

Yeah, I'd always taken the end as what really happened to him. But the more I think about it the more it could just be another of the Pupkin fantasies that litter the film. Fantastic stuff though. So many classic moments.

The ending to KoC has been debated for many years, Scorcese says that depending on what that audience thinks the ending is, it says more about themselves than the actual film...

I guess that's true of any piece of art.

Rise again Jack Daniels, you cannot be an insult to the art if you say so yourself. Most people who are rubbish live in blissful ignorance of how bad they are. Use the experience, use it well. Maybe you could have been an antelope in a colosseum full of lions perhaps? Give it a good face and I think you could get a laugh. Give it another go and hey at least you don't have Eric Morecambe on your back: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vy-fHzJGaE

Cheers for the kind words Zed and Shandonbelle,
as for Ruper Pupkin, the original script says that
he definitely achieved infamy/fame and actually does
appear on Langford's show... (a satire on fame)
But Scorcese and De Niro wanted it to be another
fantasy segment. When I first saw it, I took
as that he did end up on the show, but apparently
it's in his mind.

Cheers Bill, In the cold light of day I've realised I froze
because before I went up I kept thinking, this is absurd,
all of us taking turns to impress the crowd with our carefully
crafted wittiscms, and mannerisms and stories, and as soon as I
became attached to the complete pointlessness of what I was doing
(I don't want to be a comedian professionally y'see) I froze. Badly.
Nerves, or an inferior complex, I'll never know.

Seconds before going up, I had the epiphany: 'This Is Stupid.' 'What the f*ck am I putting myself through?' 'And for what reward, a cheap laugh?'
And as soon as that popped in there, I couldn't untangle myself from it. So I had my epiphany on stage, in painful silence, when I wish I'd had that idea hours earlier.

So, all in all. I've realised just you're a big fan of something
doesn't mean that you have to partake in it.

I thought this thread was Micheal Hutchence's autopsy report

Now he was one cool cat. I loved him.
Shame it ended that way though....

I could post my vid on suicide.org as a farewell to friends and family.

ps- Continuing in the blog-like nature of this confessional; In the last couple of minutes I've re-entered the same competetion and decided to go back and win it this time. Otherwise it'll haunt me. Plus I still have three more things I'd already booked... So perhaps should get back in the saddle after all.

Spent a horror-filled night of insominia reading interview/clips of comedians
who'd had early horrific experiences on stage. V.Funny, and it seems, universal.

Didn't help me last night though

Sick

I know you go see me as the anti-christ and don't like my questions, Jack, but do you just do stand up? Do you have any other writing ambitions? Sketches or sitcom or journalism? And I'm not being sarcastic or catty, just asking a question.

That's not so Chipolata, I acted like a dickhead with you for no good reason because my inflated self took a minor comment on GF2 to an extreme fanboyish tantrum level. So sorry about that.

Having a deep love for certain stand ups, it has been something I started about two months ago, as a novelty, and because I had material, and then because I won my first three competetions in the space of one week I got ahead of myself.

But seriously, non-novelty, my passion is filmmaking, non-comedy, influenced by German expressionism aesthetics, I love that so much, and have made a few short Tim Burton inspired films and won small festivals in Manchester (Burton used to be big a idol of mine).

Stuff I love for their cinematography, The Orphanage, Let The Right One In, Emanuel Lubeski, Alfonso Cuaron, that's what I want to do with my life and that is something I like to think myself naturally gifted at and would compete in any competition.

Comedy, I can't shake off that novelty feeling.

This is where I spend most of my time contributing; http://wondersinthedark.wordpress.com/

How about you Chipolata? Do you write?

Never mind Jack.
I had a similar experience once.
I didn't freeze exactly I was just ill prepared & Bombed really badly.
At least you know what the cause was.

If you don't believe in what you're doing at least for those 5 or 10 minutes then no'one else is likely to.

You'll have learn't more from that gig than all the ones that went well.

Most artistic endeavours are stupid and pointless, if you choose to look at them that way. I suspect it is something to with the human condition. Most performers find a delusional personality and sociopathic tendencies helpful in dealing with these sort of thoughts, but I choose to beleive that they are not an absolute requirement if you want to get on.

It would be terrible kharma to walk away now with your tail between your legs you like a whipped cur. So get back on that horse and fail like a man, striving hopelessly for years before becoming dispirited and embittered. Follow your dream.

Very true. Doubt 1 minute even counts as one.

Ha, this was pretty much my material.
