Difference is I've met Marbles many times and while he's happy to court media it's only to talk about issues and what he sees as wrongdoing, not to talk about himself.
Did the guy who threw the egg at Prescott do it for self promotion?

If a guy throws a drink in your face at a bar he's going to get a beatdown. I really want to see that happen to one of these tossers sometime. A serious, broken bone beating that ends in unconsciousness. It really angers me when someone thinks their personal views on politics or whatever give them the right to assault someone.
Relax, Randy, he got bashed by Wendi.
It's too bad she didn't perform some sort of break-the-neck-and-rip-out-the-spine Kung Fu move.

But you supported the Iraq war?
I think in the Bible it would be a pie for a pie.

Yes and I also supported the right of people to protest it peacefully. Mr. Marbles could have picketed outside the proceedings, taken out an ad in a newspaper or written a comedy routine if he wanted to "bring attention" to the man at the center of the biggest news story on the planet. But instead he decided to physically assault him.
Physically assault sounds a bit much; it was a bit of foam on the head. Silly thing to do though, sure.
It's a physical assault in every sense of the word. What would happen if you did it to a cop? If you can't do it to a cop then you can't do it to anyone else.
Celebrities and politicians are murdered every year by people who rush up out of nowhere. Nobody knows if it's a pie or a pistol until it's too late. One of these days a pie tosser will be killed by a bodyguard and it'll be his own stupid fault.

That is a good point.

Like with anything, there are different shades to it and how it's looked at and how it's treated afterwards should take that into account. Beating this man unconscious and breaking his bones, for example, would probably be an overreaction.

There's a million things you couldn't do to a police officer, but I could do to other people.

As he's had some newspaper profiles today, and the thread was created off the back of an interview on Radio 5, I think it's fair to say that you're squarely wrong on that one.

Well sure.
And that guy who threw an egg at Prescott a few years back got his just desserts when Prescott turned round and smacked him one.
I'm not saying people should do it.
When Marbles was a regular poster here, I found him to be an entirely pleasant and reasonable chap, but his actions against Murdoch were pathetic, pointless and cowardly.
I don't like ol' Rupe any more than most other people, but that doesn't make a physical assault, particularly given his age, somehow an 'ok' thing to do, and I'd question the morals and upbringing of anyone who thinks it does. Whatever happened to "two wrongs don't make a right"?
It may have been 'only' a bit of shaving foam that Murdoch was attacked with, but - aside from anything else - it seems little more than luck that Marbles isn't now on a murder charge, having induced a fatal heart attack.
The papers reported his father to be 81, so I'd like to know what Jonathan's reaction would be if someone attacked Mr Bowles with a plate of shaving cream.

Chicken and egg old bean. And how much is about him and how much about Murdoch and why he did it?
