I thought the first episode was better than the second. Surprised they used 'storm in a D cup' joke, heard that many times.
This show being one that encourages writers to submit material, would one assume that the majority of it's audience are writers too?
I'm writing a sketch with a self-aware joke in it. I should probably remove it because it doesn't really relate to anything else within. But it brings up the question of how "smart" should we presume the audience are? Not that most people wouldn't get a self-aware sketch. But would it be best to dumb things down for a broader audience who have no knowledge of "script" language?
Just a thought.
This show exists mostly to allow potential writers to show off their skills.
So you need to think what a Radio 4 sketch show sounds like and aim for that.
Your ultimate aim I guess is to be invited to join the News Quiz team.
That said I absolutely stink at this as reflected in my utter failure to achieve anything.
Cool.
Trying to write topical sketches when you know nothing and have very little understanding of recent events it's a very hard task indeed.
I'm currently trying to churn my brain into figure out how to sum up the recent stock market danger thing! Damn, my brain is against me!
Read the BBC news site lazy boy!
Then think how you'd describe to a friend of yours with no interest in the news, a short attention span and a sense of humour.
Then drink a pint of whiskey and start a fight with the cat on the shed. Then shout at the neighbours, cry realise you've pissed your pants. Attempt suicide and find out you've taken a whole bottle of hormone replacement pills. Grown tits and your testicles have fully retracted.
That's how I write sketches.
That's what I do. I always go to the main news sites. But I can't see a neatly summed up phrase.
I've gone with "falling rate of the global economy". Does that sound right? I know there's no context for my sketch but this being a topical joke, is that what happened this week? "The Global Economy fell"? Or did it just warn of it?
What's the disonance point?
Where does the story become bizarre.
So global economy fails?
Poverty chic on life style TV? The money program asking the audience for spare change?
I'm not overly eager to share my ideas until they're rejected by Newsjack I've decided to go with "The growing rate of the debt crises".
Those sketches you and other have posted in crit', are they rejects or not?
early drafts
Oh, right. I'd be worried that someone would nick my ideas! Especially as it's quite a good spot to get on, I bet they're a lot of lurkers scouring this place and others like it for steals.
Random sketches I don't worry about but seeing as Newsjak will be inadvertently driving a lot of traffic this way. I'd be extra cautious whilst the series airs. They may not nick whole sketches, but concepts and jokes are ripe for picking.
It's the fine line between spotting the topical that will get in and then not going for the stuff that everyone will do. Listen to the show (last week's was on the whole pretty good.) as it is changing with the change in production/editorial team. Also, they haven't quite decided on Justin's character. There were usually references to how posh Miles was in each show in previous series. Read the webchats. They are very good and give a good steer on who the team is thinking.
Main thing is. Just write something. And then join the rest of us in the wednesday evening/thursday self immolation sessions.
I'm listening to it.
I think I give up.
I just don't get it.
As in you don't find it funny, sooty?
