Newsjack - Series 5 Page 12

sent my three sketches off this morning. Next to do is corrections and one liners

Aagh hit writers block 2 big stories

Computer predicts the future

Al Quaeda to open Qatari embassy

can't think of anything to do with them.

Right. That's it. I'm calling it a day for this week. Two sketches and twenty-eight one liners. All I ask for is one gag to make it through. The £18 will barely pay for all the crackers I've had to open.

Isn't it just 12 per person?

Fancy swopping lines see if we can advise each other?

New Met chief appointed. That's my sketch buggered.

I don't think there's any particular limit - I think 12 was chosen as a random example for the bit in the guidelines where they say not to send through each one-liner separately.

Breaking News on Sky right now - GADAFFI HAS BEEN FOUND!!

psyche.

ffs. Gadaffi found ? Bang go 3 of my gags. Just got to hope that the government doesn't make a good decision or Alistair Darling gets 'outed', before tomorrow's deadline

Fear not PB - it was a gag (see the hideous Americanism "psyche" at the bottom)

ahh having to point out to someone that you were telling a joke is a great omen on NewsJack submission day!

It's okay. I've not bothered with Gadaffi, I've tended to focus on local news. The parking crisis outside the infant school, the disappearing milk from number elevens doorstep and the noise from the Rose & Crown, sometimes way past midnight.

Wow. Non stop in your part of the world.

An episode is here. Just needed a bit of creative searching:

Thanks for this link, it was exactly what I was looking for! ("It was exactly this for which I was looking"?)
Err...thanks though, very helpful.

I do have a couple of questions for all you wisened old Newsjack sages on here:

1. If your sketch gets rejected in the first week, is it worth re-jigging it and resubmitting it for the second week, or is that usually a waste of time?

2. In BCG'ers experience, what is the average success/hit rate of sketches and one-liners people send to Newsjack? e.g. Do you get one line on per show? One line on per series? In other words, if I send sketches and one-liners in to Newsjack, exactly how low should I set my expectations? :D

Oh, hello everyone by the way! Wave

I've only got a miserably small amount of one-liners. Not very good either, aghhhh. Brain has been too tired.

No harm in sending them though, will send them off in the next hour.

Rule of thumb never resubmit to any show

scrpt readers hate it

I've read that anywhere between 400-800 people submit each week and each show credits around 25-30 writers.

Now, if we pretend that the same 600 people (on average) submit every week and every week they credit 30 different writers, then 180 people out of 600 are going to get a writing credit this series. So that would be 30%. 25 writers a week from 800 submissions gives an even scarier 19%.

But it isn't quite that simple because some people get more than one credit in a series and a few of the writers will be in-house and not really beardy-weirdy non-comms.

So, in short, your chances are less than 30% based on the maths but could be much higher or lower depending on how well you meet the NewsJack requirements.
