Yeah, he's a c**t!
iPlayer & Other Online Streaming: Hidden Costs? Page 2
Quote: TopBanana @ August 25 2011, 4:30 PM BSTGrrr....yesterday I had used 6.2GB of my usage for August (according to the BT monitor). Today, I thought I'd listen to a 45 minute radio show on iPlayer as I still had the best part of 4GB left.
The monitor I downloaded to, err, monitor my usage now tells me I've gone over my 10GB limit
How can 1 x 45 mins of radio streaming do that???!
I'm stunned.
The radio show alone can't. So more to the point, what does BT tell you you've now used? I wouldn't trust many of those monitoring apps as far as I could throw them.
Quote: Teddy Paddalack @ August 25 2011, 4:37 PM BSTI just got a WiFi modem and piggy back off next doors internet, the cheeky bastard went to bed early last night though while I was halfway through down loading my mid week porn, so there is a down side.
Is he willingly sharing with you?

Could he possibly be being used as a host for something like a peer-to-peer Torrent sharing and be unaware of it? Would any malicious virus or program do that? Maybe an innocent background program could be running with the wrong settings?

Thanks guys.
The BT monitor only updates at 23.59 each day...so I guess I'm gonna have to wait.
I've not used iPlayer since the last problem in June. It's the only thing that I've done differently today.
I've also run a anti-virus/malware scan and always have the Avast software running live.
The system tray tells me I'm only connected to my BT Hub.

We went over out limit 3 months running, each time we recieved our warning letter *after* we went over the limit.
More importantly. Does the monitering apps say what was wathced?
No, neither monitor gives details. I asked BT to tell what I'd used to see what pushed me over and they said they couldn't due to 'data protection'.
?
Aaron may have a great point...BT usually email me when I'm near the limit. They did last month. I've not received one this month, so perhaps my free monitor is incorrect.
We'll see tonight....

It shouldn't be possible. Even if it were uncompressed, CD-quality audio it would be well under a gigabyte. Is it possible that someone else is using your connection?
I average 250 GB per month.
I do hope you know I was joking earlier about my piggy back exploits, this is a comedy site you know, not a point the finger at other posters site.

I'd get rid of your monitor ASAP then. It's clearly incorrect, and - without wishing to scaremonger - could be contributing to your internet use maliciously.
As for other people using the connection, a free bit of software wouldn't be able to detect that.

I do apologise if my comments seemed like that, the first one was genuine interest about the usefulness of wifi sharing and the second was a joke, added to Leevil's list
I can feel the net closing in, if it gets any closer I'll have to log off and get dressed in case there's a knock on my door (Makes mental note to replace leather studded mouse with normal one)

If that's a Richard Gere rumour esque thing, maybe lose the mouse altogether
