Yes - but that added sonething to the original. Like "Wheels on Fire" by Julie Driscoll anyone who covers a Dylan song would never sound like the writer.

Disagree. I would argue that all music is based on previous music anyway, so whether it is a cover or not is irrelevant. There's plenty of so-called original work which is completely derivative, and plenty of covers which are ground-breaking. Hendrix was a good example; also 'America' by The Nice.
However, Madonna's American Pie tasted bland to me, but there again I don't think of her as a serious musician, more of a celebrity performer.
I simply cannot stand this Madonna creature.

Madonna has done pretty well. Artistic, individual and mad at times. Sad to see so much envy decrying talent and work.

Yes. That's why.
Madonna's done some great songs (I particularly like Spank Me). She's not somebody I'd want to know, but she has an impressive body of work.
