Where as me and Trabs are on the wavelength experience to funnyville

As the saying goes, everyone has at least one Isaac Newton sketch in them.

Here's mine from 2007...

EXT. MEADOW - DAY

17TH CENTURY ENGLAND. A SUNNY DAY. ISAAC NEWTON, CARRYING A BOOK, WALKS TOWARDS A LONE APPLE TREE. (GRAMS: BAROQUE MUSIC.)

CAPTION: "WOOLSTHORPE, LINCOLNSHIRE - 1666"

(REPLACED BY) CAPTION: "MONDAY"

HIS PATH CROSSES THAT OF A BUXOM MILKMAID. HE RAISES HIS HAT.

MILKMAID
Good morning, Sir Isaac.

SIR ISAAC NEWTON
And a very fine morning it is too, young Elsie.

AS SHE PASSES, SIR ISAAC ALLOWS HIMSELF A BRIEF LECHEROUS GLANCE OVER HIS SHOULDER.

CUT TO:

SIR ISAAC SETTLING HIMSELF DOWN UNDER THE TREE. HE OPENS HIS BOOK AND BEGINS TO READ. SUDDENLY, AN APPLE FALLS ON HIS HEAD. HE INITIALLY REACTS IN PAIN, BUT THEN LOOKS AT THE APPLE QUIZZICALLY. AFTER A MOMENT'S DELIBERATION, HE SHAKES HIS HEAD AND CONTINUES READING.

FADE OUT.

THE SAME SCENE, THE FOLLOWING DAY

CAPTION: "TUESDAY".

SIR ISAAC AGAIN WALKS OVER AND SITS DOWN UNDER THE TREE. HE BEGINS TO READ. AGAIN, AN APPLE SUDDENLY FALLS ON HIS HEAD.

AFTER RECOVERING, HE AGAIN STARES IN CURIOSITY AT THE APPLE. THEN, AS THOUGH HE SUDDENLY HAS HAD AN BRILLIANT IDEA, HE OPENS HIS MOUTH AND RAISES HIS FINGER... THE THOUGHT, HOWEVER, ELUDES HIM. HE SHAKES HIS HEAD DISMISSIVELY.

FADE OUT.

AGAIN, THE SAME SET-UP.

CAPTION: "WEDNESDAY".

SIR ISAAC SITS DOWN UNDER THE TREE. HE HAS A SMALL DRESSING ON HIS FOREHEAD AS A RESULT OF THE PREVIOUS DAY. HE LOOKS UP AT THE TREE WARILY, BEFORE OPENING HIS BOOK AND RELAXING.

AFTER A FEW MOMENTS, A (LARGER THAN BEFORE) APPLE FALLS ON HIS HEAD, KNOCKING HIM OVER. HE SITS UP AGAIN, RUBBING HIS HEAD. THEN A WHOLE TORRENT OF APPLES RAINS DOWN UPON HIM, KNOCKING HIM UNCONSCIOUS.

AS HE SLOWLY COMES ROUND, SHAKING HIS HEAD TO RECOVER HIS SENSES, WE SEE THAT HE HAS A MASSIVE REALISATION. HE THROWS HIS BOOK AWAY, PICKS UP AN APPLE, KISSES IT AND RUNS OFF EXCITEDLY.

FADE OUT.

THE SAME SCENE.

CAPTION: "THURSDAY"

SIR ISAAC STRIDES TOWARDS THE TREE. (THIS TIME WE SEE ONLY A HEAD AND SHOULDERS SHOT OF HIM.)

FADE TO BLACK.

WE HEAR THE SOUND OF VIGOUROUS SAWING - FOLLOWED BY THE CREAKING SOUND OF A TREE FALLING OVER.

FADE UP.

WE SEE THE TREE HAS BEEN FELLED. SIR ISAAC CONTENTEDLY OPENS HIS BOOK WHILST MUNCHING ON AN APPLE.

OVER HIS SHOULDER, WE SEE THE BOOK HE'S STUDYING IS A COLLECTION OF EROTIC DRAWINGS. HE MAKES SOME APPROPRIATELY DIRTY SOUNDS OF APPRECIATION.

END

Welcome back Dr Tim!

Good to see Dr Tim has returned to comedy after his foray into botany.

If there is a general amnesty on Isaac Newton sketches: https://www.comedy.co.uk/forums/thread/14622/

BCG Isaac Newton League Table

1 Ben - 5pts

2 Tim - 4pts

3 Trabs - 3pts

4 Timbo - 2pts

5 Sooty - 0*

*Sooty relegated

I didn't really like this sketch - it seemed to easy.

Though not as easy as Walker's mirthless effort.

Sorry to be a bit po-faced, but having read Trabs's sketch earlier I'm afraid I wasn't as impressed as some seem to be. It's evident from the thread that Newton/Apple sketches aren't unique so it needs something special to stand out. In this case the thing that stands out is that the punch doesn't fit with (the internal) logic - there's no reason for the apple to go up. They don't do that. Sooty's version at least gives a reason for the same twist.

Cheers for the feedback everyone. Wow, I really wasn't expecting there to be so many Isaac Newton sketches. Sooty's in particular is very similar. I guess nothing is original anymore. Enjoyed reading Ben, Timbo & Tim's as well.

Badge, I would say the fact that apples don't do that is part of the punchline. It's all subjective I guess.

I've never written an Isaac Newton sketch. I'm feeling left out now.

Write one about the calculus. It's bound to be good in parts.

I've got a copy of 'Opticks' on my desk next to me, I might have a flick through and see if there's any good source material for a sketch about prisms.

Isn't that the point though? This is a gag rather than a sketch with it's own internal logic. The twist at the end is the premise.

I understand the point. For most people it seems to work but for me it's what makes the sketch unsatisfactory. Do you allow something that doesn't make sense to be the twist? You could extend that thinking to almost any sketch.

I think Doc Tim's is the winner, it's a nice twist with a bit of earthy smut chucked in.
