Android App Thread Page 5

There's an AA one too. Have you tried that?

Dan

I have to convert my albums into mp3's before my phone will play them. Is there an app which will let me play then on the original WAV format?

I use Winamp for my main Music player. It's not necessarily the best. But it works well for me.

I've got an Android phone but I don't listen to music on it.

But . . for my money the best PC media player is VLC and there are a few apps available but I'm not sure what they do. Could be worth a look at them on Android Market tho?

I couldn't get Winamp to play my files. Never mind, I've got Boomboxoid now, problem solved.

I've only seen VLC remote, which as the name suggests, acts as a remote for the PC program.

There are plenty of music file converters if you Google them. Just did it now and found http://www.wav-mp3.com/mp3-converter.htm (dunno if it's any good).

Only saying because .WAVs are massive in comparison to other music formats so they'll probably take up loads of space on your phone.

Can everyone with an Android device please change their email signature to:

'Not sent from an iPhone'

just so all the pricks understand...

Thanks

Dan

Despite being quite techy, I've just found out I can use my phone as a mobile hotspot!

Settings >> Wireless & Network >> Tethering & portable hotspot >> Portable Wi-Fi hotspot settings >> Configure Wi-Fi hotspot >> Give it a name and password >> Save >> then tick the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot button.

You're up and running and up to five devices can connect at once. Connection won't be superfast but good if you need it in an emergency. And it'll probably drain your battery really quickly, like everything else on the phone!

Dan

Careful though. It's against some network providers T&Cs to tether anything other than a phone. Weird but true.

I can't seem to get my ASUS netbook to connect via my tethered Android phone, nor via wi-fi hotspot. It's annoying, and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Maybe it's because it's Linux, which I don't understand anyway

If it's via wifi, I'm not sure that Linux would be the problem. If you can do as Dan mentioned above you can tether, if you can't see those options you can't. Unless there's an app? I dunno.

Onavo will keep an eye on your data allowance usage and also, perhaps most usefully, will keep an eye on which apps are using the most.

Augment -- haven't used this yet but it sounds great for checking what things look like in your room/on your wall. Take a pic of what it is you want to buy (or build a 3d 'cube' of it, ie. new sofa) then use this to show your room in Augmented Reality to see how it looks. Sounds awesome.

iOnRoad -- more augmented reality, this will show you how close you are to the car in front whilst driving along and sound alarms if you are too close. Not tried it yet but may be useful for some.

UpSoundDown -- this app immediately turns the speaker phone on if you put the phone down on a flat surface and off again when you pick it up. Useful if you are on hold waiting for someone somewhere.

Vlingo -- Android's virtual audio assistant. Tell it what you want to do and it'll do it ie. "Text Bob how are you?" "Call Mum mobile". Siri, but for Android. This is particularly helpful for when you're in the car.

Also, something very useful I recently found out how to do in Android:
If you ring/text someone regularly (ie Wife), you can set up a one-touch shortcut by holding down on your home page until the menu appears >> Select 'Shortcuts' >> 'Direct Dial' (or 'Direct Message') >> Select the person from the phone book >> Shortcut will appear on the desktop. Just press this to ring them and there's no more going to contacts/logs, and three or four more presses each time.

Dan

One more useful setting: Start up 'Market' >> 'Settings' >> tick 'Update over Wi-Fi only'. Your automatic updates now won't use up any of your data allowance.

I had to reset this though after an update to the 'Market' app.

Dan

I wouldn't bother with mobile internet if it charged by the data. Unlimited Internet FTW!
