Having read quite a few decent sketches on this site, I am left wondering what the end game is?
Sketch shows are few and far between and those that exist normally fall into the hands of the Oxbridge Brigade who tend to treat new writers no better than a red headed step kid that's developed a limp!
Given the amount of artists and people with access to cameras etc coupled with some pretty clever sketch writers I can see no reason why you do not band together and make a half hour recording.
Once posted on You Tube you could then set about directing peoples attention to it.
Thus rather than waiting four months for your material to go flying over the head of some 22 year old London Centric intern at the BBC Writers Room, you could as a collective contact producers by email and ask them to take a look on You Tube.
It would work, you could empower yourselves.
Whilst I think the showcase competition was and is a great idea, I have read the outline of the winning scripts and I have to admit that I thought I did as good as if not better.
Of course I would say that, but everything that was submitted went through a judgmental filter of the guys who run this site and obviously my stuff didn't flick their switch and I whole heartedly accept that.
But having seen what they went for I have to say I never had a chance because the two judges in this case have a completely different sense of humour than me, which in turn may not match he expectations of the people they have asked to judge the showcase.
With the You Tube Caper you could reach much more and show more diversity, because comedy is subjective and the more angles covered the greater the chance of success.
Empower
I agree with this.
Companies don't really accept new sketch show ideas; they ask for narrative comedy, isntead.
SO GUYS!!! Any fellow sketchwriters (from the London area) on here wanna meet one day to record a selection of our sketches????? Why not, eh!?
PM me or post here if interested....
