Actually, this is the crux for me. Have him fail once doesn't do much. Have him fail in three quick and escalating ideas with a clear resolution that he's failed and this could be a real winner. But make us know he's failed. As it is it's dry and that's fine until you realise the Mum has done precisely nowt. Let her do nowt by all means but play it through him in more than his absence.

I can see what your saying using the rule of 3. I might revisit it or maybe do another 2 and combine all three together.

I didn't find it very funny, although version 2 was better.
How about:

He comes in with a pig mask: I've got Swine Flu: Fails.
He comes in with a beak: I've got bird flu: Fails
Comes in saying "I've got a headache, looking ill: final panel has him in bed, playing a video game, big smile on his face.
You can work out how Mom should react and how to fit it in! That's your job!
