British Comedy Guide

Cybill

Cybill was a nineties US sitcom about a middle-ageing actress who finds that roles are drying up and the parts available are often quite different than those she had been used to. She has two daughters from two different ex-husbands, who she has good relationships with. The daughters are often embarrassed by the behaviour of their loud, eccentric feminist mother.

Cybill's best friend is Maryanne, a wealthy alcoholic divorcee who has an unhealthy fixation on her ex-husband. The show follows the outrageous exploits of Cybill and Maryanne as they interfere in the lives of their families, pursue various bizarre acting jobs that Cybill lands, antagonise Maryanne's ex-husband, embark on various social campaigns and indulge themselves in various fads, fashions and cocktails.

It has been likened to Britain's Absolutely Fabulous, but is warmer and more restrained - however it did break ground in the US for its frank discussion of women's issues - an attribute that sometimes brought the writing into conflict with network executives. The show ran for four seasons and ended with a cliffhanger that was never resolved.

Did anyone watch Cybill? Are there fans on here? Cybill Shepherd, the star, has commented that it appealed more to a British comic sensibility.

I used to watch it, liked it a lot at the time. Cybill herself was very good in it.

It was great - I had an argument about with Keith Lindsay about it once.

I liked it. Christine Baranski was most excellent as Maryanne and the relationship between the two of them was excellent.

Dan

Cybill's great, lots of fun and very enjoyable. Like it a lot, and own the whole set on DVD.

"Doctor Dick!"

Aaron, I'm glad we agree on the merits of this show if not its British counterpart! :D

I got the boxed set also, and it comes from England - the only place where it was available. All I had been able to get from the US was a "Best of.../Collectors Edition" with a few episodes. I really quite love the series and am glad to have it.

Interesting that she thinks it appeals more to British audiences. Did you ever see anything of "High Society"? Only I rarely ever talk to anyone who has.

No.

I thought it was okay. Shepherd's autobiography was good too. She tried to get Bruce Willis to guest on the final season so they wouldn't get cancelled, but he declined.

I liked Cybil in Moon Lighting. I should really have mentioned her in the "Who do you fancy?" thread although I don't remember watching much of this sitcom.

Laughing out loud Laughing out loud Laughing out loud

I just got around to finishing the boxed set. This really was a terrific show that ended on a high, even if it was unresolved. Even when Cybill and Maryanne were led off by the police, accused of killing Maryanne's ex-husband, it was not suddenly played for melodrama and sentiment.
In an interview, Cybill Shepherd speculated that Maryanne's ex, Dr. Dick, may have faked his death. Happily, we can assume, from the episode "The Golden Years" - which shows Maryanne and Cybill continuing their antics in their senior years - that they got off and continued to live their happily madcap lives.

As far as womens issues are concerned Roseanne was way ahead of it by several years.

It is a very good sitcom, one of my favourites. Should never have been treated so badly.
