British Comedy Guide

Spreading myself too thin?

I want writing to be my full time job. I realise it's a long and very disappointing road but at least I know that's what I want to do.

At the moment I work full time and try to write on the train and then every evening, although that doesn't always happen. My problem is I can't decide what to focus on.

I'm trying to write a 'calling card' drama script but I'm also writing a sitcom and a comic. I'm also thinking of entering the cBeebies comp, simply because I feel I do better writing to a deadline with a brief.

If I had to choose I'd do comedy but have been told it may be easier to get into writing TV drama, I'd happily write for a soap if I could give up my job and just write.

Just wondered what the consensus was? Should I concentrate on one genre or go for it and write everything? What do you guys think?

This is only my second post but don't hold back I can take it!

I'd concentrate on one at a time, at least!

It's good to try every genre you're interested in though.

Concetrate, at first at least, on the one you actually enjoy the most. That's what I'd do, anyway.

Cheers guys, I suppose as I enjoy writing the comedy so much I should focus on that.

Although I think I will count the cbeebies comp as comedy. If three to five year olds don't want to have a laugh who does?

If you are currently doing a full time job and managing to write in your spare time then I would think that the best option may be to try for TV drama if you think you can do it and get work. That way you can still continue writing other things in your spare time.

If you're determined to write for a living then it's surely better to take any chance at a route into it and move to writing what you want once your name is known than write what you want and never get anywhere. It's not like nobody else has ever taken a job they don't specifically want as a way into a certain industry or company they really want to be in.

Concentrate on one.

Form a master plan.

Then pounce.

Like a tiger.

Thanks for the opinions guys, majority for specialising but one for doing whatever I can get !

Afinkiwan, I know exactly what you are saying, I'd write anything just to write for a living. I certainly wouldn't descriminate just because I wanted to write comedy. If I could do TV drama then fantastic it could indeed provide a route into comedy.

Don, thanks for the mantra, you sound like the master from Kickboxer, he knew his onions.

My master plan is that I will finish what I've started, ie my drama script and my sitcom and see what happens from there.

Cheers guys sometimes this writing malarky just messes with your head, thanks again for your opinions.
