I'm personally pretty tired of gossip and opinions being mixed in and fed to us as "news". For a change, the official line is being reported, and most papers are avoiding rumours. It's quite refreshing, whether you believe it or not!

Legalities of the assassination aside, it seems to me that treating the body to a Muslim funeral wasn't really a deterrent to future terrorists.
Perhaps what should have been done was to ensure that he did NOT get a Muslim funeral, so he didn't get to his concept of heaven & 72 virgins or whatever.
Perhaps he should have been treated in the Mediaeval manner, i.e. his head chopped off and displayed on a spike at Ground Zero in New York and then later perhaps pickled in formalin in a big jar and built into a glass case in the foundations of the new building at ground zero, with a big label "So perish all terrorists".

1 They were given massive leeway by the US because a terrorist boogyman has justified in the eyes of it's citizens some of the most egregious foreign adventures of all time.

No, no, I'm not saying they faked the mission, I don't believe that. For sure they dropped a load of soldiers in the compound and killed the occupiers who were presumably Jihadis - rather that OBD wasn't among them.
The last communication from OBD was in 2006 on audiotape. It's genuineness is disputed.

How do you explain the lack of videos from 2004 onwards? They were either being suppressed or he wasn't making them. Why not? It's not like he had a day job. And why would he help Bush get re-elected?

Releasing the picture to journalists, doesn't mean it will go out on the 6 O'Clock news. Journalists already have access to all sorts of terrible images that they never use. They haven't even released footage of the burial at sea - because it didn't happen and the footage doesn't exist.
Finally if he was unarmed then he couldn't have resisted capture and they would have taken him alive.

Why pretend to have killed Bin Laden? The only one to benefit is Obama. And that popularity spike will soon be wiped out once the Fox/Tea Party/Birther smear machine kicks in.
They were worried he would be wearing a suicide vest or more realistically have a grenade in his pants. It's the Menedez factor if you're within 30 feet or so of even a small explosive device you've got a good chance of being killed (and that includes if you're wearing armour). I suspect the Americans over estimated his courage.
