My characters - What do we think?

The scharacters, from my sitcom "suburban Bohemia", work in a high- profile contemporary performance/arts company. They have moved from the big city and set up house in a regional city as part of a cultural development/research project. They function, bizarrely, as a nuclear family, of sorts.

Xander Zanii

Xander is in his late thirties and is a loud, snobbish 'theatre maker' and the Artistic Director of "Group Z Productions". His dialogue drips with arts funding buzzwords. His clothes echo the 'New-Romantic' style of his eighties childhood, which he has never fully grown out of. He is spoilt and self-involved but likes to think of himself as socially aware and caring. He displays this some of the time - but cracks appear often as he battles his own self-indulgent tendancies. He likes a drink. He is like the rebellious, unruly teenage son of the family unit.

Lily Von Lieberslieder

Lily is a bitter, cynical cabaret diseuse and contemporary dance choreographer. She is Xander's lifelong friend and associate director. They were once married for a week - but it was spent in a coma and quicklly anulled. Her look is 'gothabilly' - with lots of black and a little white and red. She is selfish and scheming and resents having to be in a regional backwater. Unlike Xander, she makes very little effort to overcome her snobbery and disdain. She is like the sour, moody teenage daughter.

Lucy Llewellen

Lucy is Xander's niece by his older sister Elizabeth. She is sensible, kindly, loyal and very professional. She loves her Uncle Xander, but is exasperated by his disorganisation and immaturity. She comes to work with him as his project manager. She is in conflict with Lily, who she sees as a negative influence on her uncle. Lucy functions as the mother.

Melanie Braxton

Melanie is a beautiful but air-headed "It Girl" with aspirations to being a serious actress, which Xander insists she could be. In the meantime, however, she works as his secretary/receptionist. This is Xander's justification for keeping her around, however, her father is an important media contact and she is also his regular lover. She is not totally exploited, however, as she is just smart (and shameless) enough to grab any available media attention, good or bad, and to manipulate her boss, using her feminine wiles. She can turn him on and off as she pleases. She is like the teenage son's annoying, tarty girlfriend who annoys the rest of the family.

Jac

Jac is a mysterious and androgynous designer. Even old friends Xander and Lily can't place Jac's gender, and are probably too afraid to ask in case they end up in an awkward moment with the bizarre character. Jac is cool, quietly spoken but cutting and direct, able to keep a handle on situations when Xander and Lily loose their cool. Having said that, Jac will happily join in much of their bad behaviour and is equally at home bitching with the girls or having a man-to-man chat with Xander. jac functions as the father.

Sound interesting? Criticise me! :D

Hello Todd

I like the sound of those characters. You certainly seem to have put the effort in to create some conflict between them and it will be interesting to see how they work on the script page. I haven't read your sitcom extract yet (I think I saw it posted here), so I'll give it a read and see how these people react to one another.

I can't yet see much to criticise with these people and I don't necessarily want to attempt to pull them apart simply to say I've pulled them apart as that is unfair. Instead I'd like to read your script, then go back to the character bios and see how they gel.

By the way I am no expert, just a fellow scribler who loves trying to write sitcom.

Def.

Thanks a lot for that. The Melanie and Jac characters do not appear in the shortened version that I entered in "The Sitcom Mission" that is up here.
I will post the full version soon.
