How do you define Classical music?

If you can answer that then you're a better man than I, Bungit In.

But I think there is a generally accepted, but vague notion of what is classical music which defies definition.

There can be a list of, generally accepted, 'classical' composers . . Beet, Hyd, Moz, Sib, Tch, Viv, Brah, Hand, Elg, Berl, Mend, Grig etc, etc et al.

Then there's the operatics, Wag, Pucc, Verd and even, mayhap G&S.

Then one gets to Prok, Rav and then, when one accepts those, along comes Britt,Bart,Scho,Cage, Stok . . .

And then . . . Berns, Strav,

Is not possible.

OK, it's what Simon Cowell and rioting chave have never heard of!

Yes it was. In all seriousness though, I quite like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3X9LvC9WkkQ

Oi! You've made me look like I'm having a mental conversation with myself. Don't be ashamed of your Astley love, we're all here for you

Should chave not have an accent? Or maybe a triple 'a'? :)

OK! So I've had a couple ! You're like 'er indoors! :D

All worthwhile women have an effective 'oi!' :D

But to demonstrate my gentler side, my most favouritest piece of classical music is Tartini's Devil's trill sonata
(less of the 'tart' and 'shrill' jokes thank you)
Tis said that it came to him in a dream

It has to be said I do quite like Astley's voice, quite a unique one, lucky geezer. And don't worry talking to yourself isn't mental, but I guess it is still a bit of a taboo.

I like a lot of choral music. I don't think that includes Rick Astley.

Arvo Pärt is very good. His stuff sounds as though it could be ancient but is actually modern.

I'm okay with music being discordant so long as it has a strong rhythm (eg Stravinsky's Rite of Spring) but I don't like the type of music that just meanders around with no discernable tune OR rhythm.

BBC Radio 3 Breakfast show is a good way to dip your toe in the water of classical music. Most of the things they play are fairly easy on the ear, plus they tend to play quite short pieces, so if you don't like something it won't be on for long.

Does this thread include this as well? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GazlqD4mLvw

A few of my favourites:

Nella Fantasia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qmeoBnrM0k
Ashoken farewell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6p8WE6ZemY
Greig's morning mood http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAbwMGZtIsY

*edit* I've just noticed this description on the first video:

"Nella Fantasia from album "Chloë - Walking in the Air" - Visit her Brazilian Fansite: http://chloeagnew.googlepages.com"

I didn't even know she had a Brazilian, but if she does, I'm sure I'd be a fan of it. :P

What pieces of classical music that are YouTubeable would people recommend to soothe my frayed nerves?

Laughing out loud Luckily I saw the title before it started playing. Wouldn't you have felt a bit bad if my head had exploded with the upset of it all?

Rolling eyes
Oh, you are a one.

Spotify is better if you can get it.

Eine Kleine Natchtmusik on either.

Why??

Because he was classically trained and has made several albums of instrumental music, several of which could be defined as classical such as Six Wives of Henry VIII.

I've waited 5 months for that answer. I was expecting something more...
