Comedy Theatre Groups

Hi what do people know about Comedy theatre groups do they exist, I want to write but its ok to write but if you don't see it acted out how can you tell if your on the right track, ive heard of these groups but havent a clue how to find one, I live in Sussex.

maybe your local amateur dramatic society would know or even do the acting for you.

Thanks for the reply, I could try them but I wasn't sure as they tend to be arty farty types and im a crude little man which transcends through every written word not matter how hard I try to write intelligently that's why I was angling at the comedy theatre because they are less likely to be pretentious and judgemental, I will stealthily make enquires.

Thanks for the input.

Also, are there no writing groups/circles in your area. They would read out the scripts. I have done that with mine, giving other writers a 'role' and then they read them out. The last one was really good, whereby it received a great reaction and at one point no one could carry on for laughing. sadly I never get anywhere with them and I think mine are so different acted out than on the page. Guess I'm a bit wacky in my writing though.
Your local library may have details of any local writers' groups

Ive only just started writing again, I tried 10 years ago, I came up with something called Office Party this was about 1 year before the hit The Office, in fairness mine was shit but for the premise, ITV wrote back and said good premise, plot a bit contrived, too crude for ITV, now they have Benidorm and Gimme Gimme Gimme has come and gone so nothing I write can be considered crude, I started writing for this comp back in Oct I had the idea of doing a sitcom around a airport can you imagine my dissapointment when I found out about come fly with me, I couldn't be bothered to think something else up and just put the characters in baggage handling only, I need to see my scripts acted out as I just read them them and after about 10 reads im bored and think whats the point maybe if I saw it acted I could see if theres potential, I will try the library but im thinking they will be a creative writing group made up of Margarets and Richards who are more interested in writing a novel than hear crude comedy !

The problem is with keep reading them, you become 'bored' and wonder why you thought it funny. I wrote one years back and some months ago I came across it. I just laughed till I cried it is so funny. [she says modestly] It's one that I sent to channel 4 and they forwarded it to the head of comedy at ITV as they had enough stuff at that time. Andy Harris [head] who got the script rang me and said it was too risque [it's set in a massage parlour....there was one on TV a couple of years back set in a brothel!!!!] but had I got anything else. I hadn't at the time. So, having said all that, leave reading your scripts for a while, then come back to them and you'll find them funny.
Try a writers' circle, you'd be surprised at the language in their writings. One member is a retired headmaster and church goer, plays the organ every Sunday there. Even I am shocked sometimes with his work/language but it's because my image of church goers etc is one of purity. His wife is timid and very classy and it just makes one wonder, no one ever really knows someone else.
If you do locate a circle, ask them first if they mind bad language, after all it is in a script not as if you are going there swearing.
P.S...there is bad language in most of mine haha

Thanks, I will see whats out there, I know theres a pub in London that meet up and read scripts out so might try that, they do it upstairs over the pub a bit like when they held the seance over the Nags head in only fools and horses !

Yes most are held above pubs. Ours has been going for 60 years!! And is done like a company with minutes taken/agenda/secretary/chairman etc. But ours is in a room at a cricket club but has a bar upstairs. There are usually about 20 odd of us at meetings but sometimes that stretches to thirty

Sounds like something out of Midsummer Murders ?
