Favourite piece of art?

When I say Art, I mean something that would most likely appear in an art gallery, rather than your favourite other form of art, such as film or music.

I'll be totally honest, I'm not that clued up on art/artists or the history of art. I am but an admirer of what I have seen so far, rather than seeking out particular artists or pieces. My usual input consists of what has been put in front of me from school, TV and other peoples walls.

I'll be even more honest and say that when I went to the Van Gogh and Rembrandt Museum's in Amsterdam, I was totally bored out of my head. Yes, some of the paintings were fascinating and beautiful. But being lined up on a wall and herded around like sheep from one piece to the next rather ruined the mood.

I occasionally browse places like deviantART. Where you will find some amazingly talented people. But there are so many entries that it is easy to get lost.

So... care to share your favourite paintings, sculptures and toilet bowls with shit smeared in them?

Well there are a couple of Van Goughs I really like, quite a few medievel paintings and some of Dali's and Kandinki's but the most beguiling painting I've looked at yet is The Garden Of Earthly Delights. Been gazing at it for 20 odd years in wonder. I have a framed print. But the effect is nothing like the first viewings of the original wooden tryptich would have been, in a darkened candlelit room. Would love to have been there.

Yes I like Magritte too.

I could probably get quite into paintings, but at the moment, I'm more into retro posters and wall signs. Here's a Blacklight poster I have from 1973:

I miss Magritte. Those opening titles where he struck the match...

No hang on, that's the wrong geezer isn't it?

I like a bit of Turner myself. This kind of thing.

Hooch wasn't bad either.

In all seriousness, I do like a bit of Turner.

Someone came into my antiques shop once and said "Is that a Gainsborough?" - It wasn't :(

There are some excellent late victorian English school artists that have never had the recogonition they deserve.

The colours on that are magnificent!

I know, it's amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing. The blues and greens in the ice give me an art boner.

Okay, I've got a couple of top pieces of art:

Lilith by Anself Kiefer

Whaam by Roy Lichtenstein

Domain Field by Antony Gormley

The Persistence of Memery by Salvador Dahli

Pistols for Two by Andy Warhol

Summertime by Jackson Pollock

There will be a load more, but I think they are my top ones. Notice the heavy Tate Modern bias!

I've always liked Lichtenstein. Yum.

I went to a Pollock exhibition once. They are so delish close up. I love big blobs and wadges of paint, corrrrr.
