"BBC chief political correspondent Norman Smith said: "Mr Cameron has decided, yes, it's painful to carry out a U-turn, but better that and one day's bad headlines, than months of wrestling with Middle England." "

I think he will suffer more than one day's bad headlines; this climb-down is yet another U-shaped nail in a decisiveness coffin which he's burying his own credibility in.

Luckily for Cameron he has his very own unpopularity lightning conductor in the shape of Nick Clegg.

Obviously this forests sell-off was an idiotic idea. But I'm not convinced the "decisiveness" thing is a real issue with voters.

Well voters have very short memories of course. All I'm saying is that historically, leaders have always got a lot of grief over their U-turns from the opposition, since it is clear proof of indecisiveness.

They're getting quite good at u turns

Nice to see Nick flexing his muscles instead of nodding like something on the rear parcel shelf.

(And no, I don't believe this is anything more than a carefully engineered stunt btw)

It's certainly not very impressive coming up with a strategy you have to back down from two months later.

This very thread was more powerful that we ever imagined.
