Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes Page 6

Oh get a grip, did Ricky piss on your chips in the 80's or something?

No, but he did work as a supply teacher at my school once. When I embarrasingly answered a question wrong, he started pulling grotesque faces and shouting (in a torturously strained voice) "Hello, my name's Joey Deacon!". Repeatedly. For about half an hour. All my classmates thought it was hilarious. For a bit, anyway.

It's tongue in cheek for comic effect. Do you really think someone so successful wouldn't either be intelligent enough to hide their arrogance, or have the people around him to tell him to tone down the arrogance for better PR if it was just unintentionally coming out?

See the thing is, there isn't any comic effect in pretending to be arrogant. Didn't think about that, did you?

I was a huge, huge fan of Ricky Gervais ten years ago. The fact I have fallen out of love with him and his current comedy may well be just my loss. But I don't think my sense of humour has changed or narrowed. I don't think it's really me that's changed much at all. I used to find him intelligent and funny... and now I don't. So what changed?

I'm getting into the overcrowded NHS bed with Walker on this one. Gervais is like an alcoholic who won the pools. He's now able to be drunk 24 hours a day instead of 4, and a comedy predicated on dwarfism being inherently funny is the result.

I've not seen much about this. How did his hosting compare to previous years? Same old same old?

See for yourself. Tina Fey and Elton John were clearly big fans.

I started to watch it on the E! channel, but the broadcast was such a f**king shambles I turned off again after a while.
Basically 20 minutes of some twat pressing random buttons throughout, so we got the first half of a Kardashians advert about 56 times, interspersed with a word or two of whoever's acceptance speech was currently showing. Unbelievable.

Did anyone else try and watch it on E?

Nah, I'm off the stimulants for January.

Fnar.

All his intros too in this clip, it's very funny throughout :)

Nice one, Gerry.

Watched the opening monologue on You Tube and found it to be much tamer then last year. From what I read, Ricky was hardly on for the rest of the show.

I feel like I've been done on a 'bait and switch' scam. I was promised unbelievably outrageous entertainment, but was given watered down Hollywood schmooze.

The lack of controversy surrounding the Golden Globes (and therefore headlines) speaks volumes - unlike Ricky this year.

I thought it was quite brave of him to plug Life's Too Short. Since America's opinion means so much to him, he might have been better off keeping it quiet.
