A few years ago we would have had to delve deep into the printed page for information but not now.
For example, I can't remember why but tonight I suddenly needed to know why judges are called 'beaks'.
Quick Google told me . .
"During the bubonic plague, judges visiting prisons used to wear primitive gasmasks, stuffed with herbs or spices thought to ward off the plague - since it looked like a beak... they were referred to as "going before the beak" as they were never seen without it."
I saw that in a film, TV programme or something and now I'm trying to think where what who. . . . anybody ?
I've seen those scary mask things with beaks in lots of history programmes/documentaries about the plague and stuff.
is that why metal beaks are a steampunk fashion? It's a bit wrong time period, as steampunk normally emulates the Victorian era, but I'd always wondered why beaks...https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=steampunk+beak&espv=210&es_sm=91&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=bpW3Us2KG62M7AbekYCYDw&ved=0CDAQsAQ&biw=1366&bih=578
Ah yep, those are the plaguey ones!
I haven't seen that in steampunk before. Scary.
