Hee.
Your girlfriend probably doesn't allow you to go into Subway, as the building contains meat. :(

OK, I've had an idea for a music based craft item that I'd like your opinion on.

Basically what I've done is melt an old cassette tape and mould it into a 'splat'. By turning the case around it acts as a stand and I think it looks quite interesting. It would certainly be a talking point even if guests said, "Why the hell have you got a melted cassette tape on your shelf?"

It's quite touchy feely as well because of the smooth and curved surface so I don't think it needs to be attached to the case. It could even be used as a paperweight.

Now, the version below is a blank tape and for testing purposes only. If I was to do this with actual bands do you think people would be interested in paying money them? Would 60s and 70s artists be more popular or would be fans of Beastie Boys, AC/DC or Oasis be more likely to buy? Maybe having a ruined Bros or Wham! tape will make it a more fun item to cheer up or annoy friends and relatives. :)

Getting cassettes from charity shops for next to nothing shouldn't be too difficult but what would people be prepared to pay? £2? £5? Any more?

Any opinion appreciated on aspect of this - I don't want to waste my time if everyone thinks it's a dumb idea.

It could work.
Like those people who make bowls out of vinyl records.

I think maybe it might be better if you made them have some other use (like a bowl/coaster), rather than just an ornament.
Or if an ornament - if you added something to it, although I'm not sure exactly what.

I've just sat the tape on a blank CD-R - now that looks quite effective. It could be a paperweight for sure or mounted in a thick frame and hung on the wall.

In an odd quirk of fate the wife is doing a craft staff on Sunday which I've only just heard about. I might do half a dozen as paperweights and charge two or three quid just to see what happens.

Is it just me or have there been an unusually high number of new BCGers in the past few weeks?

And VV has disappeared, so I suspect that s/he is one (or all) of the newbies.

Sshhh.

I miss VV. Now it's very hard for me to tell if a sketch is one of the best ever to appear in Critique and good enough to be on Armstrong and Miller.

I've completely lost track of who's in the clique.

I'm sure she'll reappear once enough people have 'taken a side'.

You're all bloody obsessed...

"It's just a bit of fun..."

I made a living at craft fairs for several years, so I know that all sorts of weird crap actually sells. Customers are on the look-out for unusual gifts. However, you'd make much more money if you just bought stuff in from China and re-sold it.

Also, I don't think it's functional enough if all it does is perform as a paperweight. It has to be able to be a vase, a doorknob, or have a clock in it; or it can even simply be 'collectable', because some people have a compulsion to collect. If it really does nothing, then you have to stick it in a nice frame and call it art.

You need to ask yourself if these will enhance your wife's display, or detract from it. It's no use if you earn a few quid from these, whilst she loses out. Some of the better craft fairs have strict rules about what can and can't be sold, so you might not be allowed to sell a new product.

In summary, it needs further development to make it really work, and even then you'll never become rich from it, but if you have fun making them, maybe it's worthwhile.

Good advice - thanks

If these items do 'enhance' the display, I dread to think what the rest of her stand looks like. :(

After having an iPod for the last six months, I've just discovered that listening to podcasts is quite a nice change to walking round listening to music all the time. WTF with Marc Maron is really good; especially enjoyed the two part interview with Judd Apatow. Comedy Death Ray Radio is good, too. I'm going to try out Kevin Smith's pod's; any other good ones?

The Opie and Anthony show is a good one and they have lots of US comics on there with a few Brit's thrown in for good measure. A friend of mine tells me that Mark Kermode's podcast is good too.

Was VV really a she though?

I only have it once in a blue moon.

Really!

Definitely a 'he'.
